Well, all of the university I'm student at is run on Lotus Domino R5. This includes enrolling for study term, enrolling for courses and exams, mail exchange... even whole PPTs are stored in hundreds of different Domino Databases.

I just wonder now since most peeps on here do hosting on Linux whether some of you still have experience on Lotus Domino?

As for me, I do a great deal of Domino Design and a bit of administration.

Never used it myself, my accountant is crazy about it - and has developed a pretty advanced system. He ran a demo of it for me once, and although I was impressed by both his system and Domino itself, I never found any real need for me to test it.

No one else?
Well, I have to say I do like Lotus Domino / Lotus Notes quite a lot. As with all thing it's not perfect either but I think for a large corporation it's a good system to use!

system admin for multiple notes servers in a wan environment. Pretty robust, good workflow capabilities, security and replication capabilities.

But the licenses are quite expensive and SMTP support is not that advanced.

What is it in specific that you would like to know in regards to this?

well, I'd just like to see how wide-spread Lotus Domino actually is. Of course concerning webhosting not a good choice but the longer I use it the more I tend to think that it's a very good option to have in a large company. Of course it has its itches and scratches that could be solved better but all in all I think it's excellent concerning workflow, spreading and archiving of information, ....
Did you ever have any security problems with Domino? Our sysadmin told me once there was a security breach...

Domino is normally used in Corporate environments and has very strong mail capabilities in this area You could basically categorize Domino as a "Messaging and Collaboration" tool. Its also an excellent Text Based Database system allowing to easily search documents stored in Domino Databases (.nsf) files.

A lot of 'older' companies have Domino in place because prior to Exchange there were'nt really that manay enterprise level Messaging System

As far as using it for webhosting thats an overkill. Its rather resource intensive and very much more expensive$$. There's really no point unless, you have a Lotus Notes based app which you need to run off the web. On the plus side, you can actually get IIS to work with Domino instead of its built in Domina HTTP server.

Security is concern, but not so much because its normally used within Intranet Environments. In addition, if you keep up with the release patches and have an active subscription you're pretty much covered.

Actually, even after Exchange, Domino still has a larger install base of groupware clients. Domino servers and licensing is still cheaper than Exchange's. Especially if you deploy Domino Server on Linux (special pricing for Linux -- go IBM).

well, prior to october '99 I haven't heard of Lotus Domino at all. Now I do Notes developement. I just wondered how many other people actually know about Domino... well, I do work part-time at university and this sort of my "project" at least concerning Notes Design: http://www.media-mba.unisg.ch
It was quite tricky to have a proper webinterface for Notesdatabases... I mean it's no problem at all using Notes data on the web but having it displayed nicely is, what I think, quite tough.

Any other people with Notes experience out there?

I work for Abbott Labs during the summers when I'm back in Chicago as a Technical Administrator, doing mostly RF technology installs and configs, and setting up a huge internal MES system with their team.

Anyway, some genious VP of Abbott decides to use Lotus Notes for EVERYTHING. Now, don't get me wrong, Lotus Notes is a good product for email - but I don't want to use Lotus Notes to write my 40 page operation qualification documents! ... vp's.... we had to pleed to use MS Word ... I actually wanted to use MS ..
