Hello, I'm new here, but I've read some of the subjects and find them interesting and useful. I have a couple of question:
1 I have a yahoo domain (.com) which yahoo has hosted for several years, but I've recently heard that for security measures against domain name being stolen, the domain should be "locked" at the place of registration. I don't think Yahoo do that. I've also gathered, from reading this board, that it's possible to be registered at one place but to have the site hosted at another, and that this provides extra security. Does anyone know if Yahoo allow registration to be transferred away from them, but that they will continue to host the site (for a fee).

One other question: Until recently I've always used pagebuilder to make my site, but I've just started using html via their html editor. When I validate the html at w3c it is passed as valid, but yahoo add an extra section to my html code which invalidates it. They add the following after the </tbody> and before the final </BODY></HTML>

"<!-- text below generated by server. PLEASE REMOVE --><!-- Counter/Statistics data collection code -->
<SCRIPT language=JavaScript src="index_files/geov2.js"></SCRIPT>
<SCRIPT language=javascript>geovisit();</SCRIPT>
<NOSCRIPT><IMG height=1 alt=setstats src="index_files/visit.gif" width=1
border=0></NOSCRIPT> <IMG height=1 alt=1 src="index_files/serv.gif" width=1> "

Does anyone know how to remove it? When i reuse the yahoo html editor, the above text doesn't show, for me to remove!

I hope someone can kindly answer these questions. I know I'm learning quite a bit from reading previous messages. Thanks!

Yahoo outsources its registry to MelbourneIT. You will have more control over the account by getting the MelbourneIT registry key.
You can change hosts by arranging a hosting account with the new hosting service. That service should provide you with the nameservers to enter into your registry account. Having the registry key and direct access to MelbourneIT will make that easier.
Don't ask Yahoo to cancel your account until you have everything accomplished. That might destroy the function of the whois-listed email address. You may need that address to confirm any changes you make in your MelbourneIT registry. You may want to change the whois-listed address to one that won't be affected by other changes. You will need the old address to be correct and functional long enough to approve the change.
With access to your MelbourneIT account you should be able to lock and unlock your domain.
Yahoo will probably not give you a pro-rated refund for the unused services you paid for. If you divorce your MelbourneIT registry from your Yahoo hosting, keep an eye on your renewal dates. It's possible that the renewal fee will be different, and possibly higher. If so, consider transferring to a different registry. Be sure to have a functional email address for confirmation. You may need to unlock your registry and confirm that request before unlocking.
If you transfer your domain well in advance of your expiration, Yahoo and MelbouneIT won't refund your money, but you probably won't lose money. The renewal anniversary will remain the same, and competing registries will often give you the remaining portion of your old registry as a freebie to attract your business.
Beware of "renewal" or transfer offers you receive in the mail or as spam. The companies who harvest your whois data to send these offers should be regarded as unscrupulous and a bad choice.

I just reread the original post, and I notice you want to move the registry away from Yahoo but keep the hosting with them. I'm not sure about how that works. Most people want what I described above--getting a better host than Yahoo.

Is your current hosting plan with Yahoo an advertising-supported freebie? If so, they are always going to insert the html code to support the advertising.

Disgruntled, thanks for your reply. Ideally I'd like to register my domain name somewhere other than yahoo, preferably somewhere I can register it long term, eg 5 years, I've recently read that unless the registration is locked, it can easily be hijacked and I don't have a lot of confidence in yahoo anymore, although, because I'm used to using it, I'd keep it to host the site(is this making sense? I'm not really knowlegable about hosts/registry etc). Yahoo does say that anyone who already has a domain name registered can use that domain name for their website to be hosted by yahoo, so I guess I prob could transfer the registration and keep yahoo.

I do pay for my web hosting, it's not a freebie, so I should be able to remove their unwanted html, I just haven't figured how.

I have a LOT to learn about all matters html and webhosting. I'm finding this forum very interesting.

Thanks again!

If you want to transfer registry without changing hosting for now, you can probably just pick a registry you like and submit the request to them. If your whois-listed email is a Yahoo-hosted domain, then it will probably still forward to your address @yahoo.com like before, as long as you maintain the Yahoo hosting for it. I'm not 100% certain of that.

People argue the merits or lack thereof for being registered and hosted with the same company. In any case, it is probably best to not try to transfer registry and hosting at exactly the same time. Having made that mistake I found that the old registry immediately put the account in Transfer Pending status. While in that status (for a week) I could not enter the new nameservers. I had to wait for the transfer to complete before I could enter the nameservers for the new host into the new registry. That might not have been so bad if the old host weren't so lame.

Yahoo uses melbourneit.com registrar, if you can have an account there for controlling the domain that would be great, otherwise you can transfer the domain away to any other place.

but as for security, by default now all domain registration service providers lock domains upon registering the domain, not sure though doulbe check on your domain.

I think recently registration services have stopped locking domains by default. If I remember correctly, Godaddy notified me of this for my domain registered with them, and they notified me of the option to lock it, which I did.
The two domains that I just bought a few days ago from Namecheap weren't locked by default. Selecting the option to lock them was easy, and I promptly did that.

If the major bone of contention with "Yahoo" registration is that it is unlocked, there is probably an option in the MelbourneIT account settings to lock it.

I've now found a registrar which seems good, and they do lock by default, so I think I'll go with them, but as renewal of my domain is within 30 days, I've got to renew it with yahoo and then transfer it afterwards.

Even though yahoo use melbournit, I dont have a direct account with them, so I have no way of using their control panel to change settings. Yahoo isn't good at replying to enquiries, so I guess I'll just have to wait for 30 days before I get my domain shifted away from them.

I definitely think it's best to register domain seperately from host.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. Now I have to try and work out the second problem of removing the unwanted html yahoo place on my page as mentioned in my first post above. Maybe I should post that question in a section more specific to the problem?

I think you could probably directly access your MelbourneIT controls, but Yahoo is not very forthcoming about that. Sometimes the first time they ever mention MelbourneIT is when there's a problem that Yahoo wants to shirk helping you with.
Take a look at
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=241661
If that doesn't work, you could visit melbourneit.com and request that they send the registry key to your whois-listed email address.

Maybe the webhosting forum could provide more ideas on the html code.

Good luck.

BTW, I was a Yahoo customer at the time I started visiting this forum and needed to choose a nickname for it.

One of my email addresses has been getting spam from a work-at-home scam. What that has to do with this thread is that the spamvertised pages are hosted by Yahoo. Yes, Yahoo does sell bullet-proof hosting to spamvertisers, as long as their agents use non-Yahoo ISP to send the spam.
So I went and visited a Yahoo-hosted spamvertised site and checked the source code. Pasted below is what I found at the bottom of it.
My guess is that Yahoo is probably going to put in this proprietary code no matter what you do while hosted by Yahoo.

Are you sure about that? I am not aware of that before.

Until a few months ago I wasn't aware of it either.
The domain is job-mail-manager.com
I have already forwarded three of their spams to Yahoo and its subsidiary Inktomi. So their decision to continue hosting it is with the full knowledge that this is a spamvertised site.

Thanks, Bashar. I have just tried that. It does a pretty good analysis of the spam when I copy and paste the full email source, and it agrees with my analysis that the spamvertised site is hosted by Yahoo. Maybe getting the spam report via Spamcop will make Yahoo slightly less comfortable with this valued client.

yes i usually hammer spamcop with spam emails and usually they get added to spam databases real fast.

but its always good to use nice spam protection that uses public spam databases such as spamassassin etc..

I went to the yahoo domain control panel, but it doesn't give the registry key. As I have to wait now to renew it through yahoo, because renewal is in less than 30 days and it's advised not to attempt transfer in this time limit, I'm going to wait, renew and then transfer, and if I have problems from the yahoo end, I'll contact melbourneit.

I know I've found other sites hosted by yahoo which don't have that html on the end, so I'm thinking of emailing one such owner of such a site, and asking them how they managed said feat!

Thanks all!
