Well, I've tried a number of shared hosting and VPS's over the years. Most shared hosting wasn't for me, too many problems (mostly slow).
Anyway, for VPS's the best I ever tried was Verio's VPS back when they were the first. They basically hacked FreeBSD to customize it for their needs. At the time they were the only VPS and it was good, but very pricey. Verio still is very pricey.
So I just signed up with InexpensiveDomain.com a couple weeks ago, they are running Virtuozzo. And so far I've been extremely impressed. The disk space is plentiful, the transfer is plentiful and the servers are fast. Not to mention that they aren't extremely expensive. Out of all the hosts I've tried over the years, I'd give them an A.
If you sign up, let them know that I recommended them.
