Hey, what's the most popular tool for web design these days? still photoshop, fireworks, dreamweaver, flash?

yeah, that's what I use :-) Know of nothing else software-wise that are as popular.

Burn any copies of FrontPage that might be thrown at you though. (it's not as bad as it used to be)

I had a peek at fireworks cos the last version I used was like version 1 or something years ago, the new one seems funky. You can do drop down menus and displaced roll overs and heaps of great animations. Can a whole page be made using this? I haven't gone through it as thoroughly as i would like to at the moment.

well I do basic layouts and stuff in Dreamweaver 4 and then do refining and php scripting on EditPlus!

The most popular one by far is frontpage. I persoanlly use dreamweaver because it is very good and gives you alot of control. For more complex pages, you can use dreamweaver ultradev. Golive use to suck, I hear the new version is awesome though. You might want to check that out ( I know I will :D ). Whole websites cannot be designed in fireworks (unless they basically consist of only pictures).
anyway, you can try out all macromedia products at their website. I highly recommend them.

yeah macromedia products are great.....that is basically all I use, except for some photoshop and the like.........

Yep whole sites can be made in fireworks....(they will only be images as agiledesigns mentioned) but you can export to a html file, so it will automatically do all the slicing and create tables etc..........

I use frontpage to create the tables and all....
After that i clean up the code with notepad or UltraText or something (cant remember the name).
I use dreamweaver and flash for flash, and photoshop for images.
I use mostly imageready for slices and rollovers, and if its code I either code myself, or use fireworks for menus (very rarely).
I use Swift3D for 3d effects and all, because I suck at 3d studio max.

IceBlaze, you might like http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html which is basically a text editor (like notepad), but made for HTML. Can create tables which don't need cleaning, etc. Has preview, etc., and a bit less gunk than some of the more powerful HTML editors out there. More or less simple to use and free.

Windows, I use Homesite and PhotoShop.
Linux, Quanta and the GIMP (still learning).

Chicken, Arachnophilia is great! I use it a whole lot, espesialy for php. One of the great things I like about it is the ability to replace a variable name througout a whole site in seconds! I do wish that it would display "all" files to open instead of going down a list to find *.* which would make site wide changes easier but its still great and free. A great peice of software!

Also use Dreamweaver, notepad, kedit and vi, photoshop, Gimp, 3DStudio.
Dont use Fireworks because Im about as artistic as a brick.

I've been using Netobjects Fusion for the last couple years.. Its fast and powerful, but not the cheapest package out there.

But also use Namo Webeditor...the current version has most of the features of Dreamweaver, less expensive, and easier to use. I have recommended it to a lot of customers over Frontpage as it has a large number of templates and a good site wizard.

For graphics:
I decided to go with Fireworks a few weeks ago. I found out about Namo Webeditor a few days ago and maybe I would have chosen that one instead. But the designer who did my template used Fireworks so I guess it was a wise choice, makes future changes and customization very easy to do.

Then I use:
- PhpEd for cleaning up and ASP/PHP scripts. Still have the freeware version - really old, I think it has turned commercial now.

I remember the days when people used to proudly proclaim that they only use Notepad to make their stuff... no WYSIWYG for them.

As for me, for light updating/sprucing up I'll use notepad or homesite and paint shop pro. For bigger tasks I'll use fireworks, dreamweaver, and photoshop. There's also Illustrator and JPadPro for when they're needed.

hehe :) where I learned HTML

Takes to long to do complex formatting, and also the auto indenting, colours etc are handy :) A note, is that in DW4, the code edit view is quite a bit better than notepad: you don't even have to access the WYSIWYG interface..

Thanks for the recommendation Chicken (I was very tempted not to call you KFC... long story, lol, starts with london and a KFC Post :)).
Ill check arach-something now (See.. I'm not good with names :)).

And yes, DougBTX, UltraEdit 32 is the thing. snoogans, that program rocks :)

I still don't understand how people used to create complex websites with no WYSIWYG... Trying to code nav tables with no WYSIWYG or without the ability to preview what you do every second was a nightmare for me.
Well, what can I say, I'm coming from a lazy generation.

Personally I use:

Photoshop 5.02 > Design
Fireworks 3.0 > Image crunching
Dreamweaver 3.01 > Site layout
Notepad > Code editing

That's about it really. :)

I am learning to use Photoshop 5.5 for design

As for HTML editing, I use(d)
Notepad - thats what I used when i first leanred HTML (about 3 or 4 years ago)

Visual InterDev - I used this until I had to reformat my hard drive. When I got my computer, a guy at the store gave me Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Edition for me to learn Visual Basic, C#/C/C++, FoxPro, and to make HTML editing easier, but didnt give me any CD's.

I'm downloading that Arachnophilia thing that Chicken posted about now.
