Hi Guys,

Just wondering about what you think about windows servers for email services. Are win servers reliable enough?

Thanks!

If you are going to do any sort of volume switch to qmail on Linux. For reliability and also for add on such as spam assassin and clam they run better on a linux platforms.

There are some great windows email servers out there. You might want to look at the suite from Smarter Tools as an example.

Maybe you are still running NT4.0, but my Win2K3 with SmarterMail2 can process 45,000-60,000 e-mails a day with spam filter and virus scanner enabled on a P4 2.8 and 1gig of ram without breaking a sweat. The only time it needs a reboot when a major service pack update is applied.
The whole concept of Linux better than Windows is a myth, the system is only as good as admin managing it and the business need.

It's just that I have found in the past that windows servers have to many security problems

Windows was simply targeted more due to all the open systems run by clueless idiots. Now that the ground is more equal in the default levels of security since Win2k3 adopted the Linux method of locking down by default. Linux has become more of a target, all those people that thought Linux was simply unbreakable just by installing it are getting "hax0red" just like the Windows fools.

There are countless threads in this forum posted by clueless people thinking that their shiny new Linux-cPanel-on-a dinky-"Sillyrun"-in-some-ghetto-host-basement-bargan-dedicated-unlimited-everything-for-$3.99-a-year is absolute pinnacle of technology and security.

My sys ad friend says he wouldn't use any other server platform other than maybe oracle. Win2k has issues, not solid enough.

Well said GrindKore... It is the admin that make the server not the software. I have experience with unix based and win based systems. They both can be good, we prefer a win box running a custom email server because of "stability" and features. Use good hardware, secure your server or if you don't know how have someone that does do it. Keep your software patched and always keep an eye on third party software bugs/vulnerabilities.

I would recommend Merak from Icewarp, it is extremely fast and reliable and quite cheap too. Two versions standard and professional, the professional comes with SQL support and is good for large email systems. Their latest release incorporate LDAP too.
