I am relatively new to webhosting and was wondering what happens if a host that i put my site on goes bust, especially to my domain name after transfering it to the host? How do i reclaim the name to use it elsewhere? As i recently did this with a site. There seems to be new hosts popping up daily so surely there must be alot going under.

Steve.

If you have transferred the domain name to the host then you should have control over the domain, simply transfer it elsewhere should the need arise.

Exactly as Paul says, make sure you have control of your domain at the Registrar it was registered through (Network Solutions, Register.com, etc).

No matter the status of the current host you will be able to transfer ISPs. If you're paying for the domain, make sure you have control of it.

As for losing content -- most hosts will make references to "loss of data" in their Terms of Service.

Regardless, it's always the best idea to keep a backup of all your content on your local machine. Weekly backups to CD-R seem to get the job done around here. ;)

#1-make sure your domain is registered properly in your name and that you have control of it. Do not take these "free domain" deals that have catches such as in the host name until you fulfill six months or whatever.

#2-after seeing many of the hosting clients left high and dry, we have created our reseller contract in such a manner that if the reseller is in default, rather than shut the customer down, we either take over the customer or transfer them to another reseller. The defaulted reseller then earns commissions as an affiliate. This protects the customer while at the same time providing some continued benefit to the out of business reseller. Seeing situations like ASHosting default an OnRampAccess, leading to Sitebysize, Exa-bytes and others losing access and hundreds of customers damaged reconfirms our belief in a policy such as ours. For instance, if we had been in OnRampAccess's position, no one would have lost service...and ASHosting would be getting paid monthly as a reseller. Either we or another reseller would have the clients through the buy/sell/default agreement paragraph of the contract.

Also, a word of advice. I would not pay an annual fee on any package over approximately $100-don't gamble on anything more than you can afford to lose. The host may not be there...or, just as bad, service may deteriorate.

I would say 9/10 times the user ends up saying "Damn now where am I going to get 80 gigs of space and UNLIMITED bandwidth for $1.49 a mo.?"

Didn't ya hear?? There is a special starting in march....$1 off all of those accounts, so it would be just $0.49/mo.....and you could pay it monthly!
