View Full Version : emigrating to Australia, where should i host
sgwilks 02-27-2002, 07:21 PM I am emigrating to australia soon and would like advise about hosting my new site.I live in the UK,should i host in Australia or USA or here in the UK,are there advantages/dissadvantages to hosting in your country of residence?
Regards Steve.
madmatty 02-27-2002, 07:29 PM US is about 100 times cheaper than hosting in Australia. The price of bandwidth in Australia would give most people here heart attacks.
sgwilks 02-27-2002, 07:33 PM Why is bandwidth that much more expensive in Australia,i thought a server is a server and shouldnt matter about its geographical location.
21inchguns 02-27-2002, 07:43 PM yeah, dont host in AUS......
I agree, host anywhere but here.
Australia has a telco that can't won't let go of its monopoly - that company is called Telstra - www.telstra.com
Note the address, doesn't even have a .au after it.
Home broadband is woefull as well, so be prepared to be disappointed.
Lats...
AussieHosts 02-27-2002, 07:48 PM Steve, bandwidth charges down here are unique and varied. It's more expensive than the US in the long run, but so is the UK. I'd say the majority of aussie sites are hosted overseas for that reason, but things will change. Eventually the government will catch on to the amount of $$$'s that are being spend overseas on hosting.
That said, there are ways to host down here cheaper than overseas.
Cheers
Gary

There's just not as much bandwidth to go round, so it costs more. Not 100 times more mind you, but it's fairly significant.
cynic 02-27-2002, 07:54 PM I moved to australia and nearly had a heart attack at the price of hosting. I wanted 500meg+ and at least 12 gig allow each month with no weird and fancy doodangles(technical term) and just a bit of adult content. What i got offered was no or 100+ and 3-5gig at a price of do i sell the wife. If your looking for storage and band width, definately go with an american company, even with the exchange rate and bank fee's it is still really good.

AussieHosts 02-27-2002, 08:05 PM You wont get your adult content on an Australian server anyway Cynic. Not legally anyway. That was all scrapped 1/1/01. There are some datacentres that will turn a blind eye to it if it's on your own box, but will pull the plug without notice if a take-down notice is recieved.
Cheers

Choppy 02-28-2002, 05:04 PM Adult content is a big NO NO, in Aussie data centres and websites most of the smaller webhosts in Australia are using american placed servers anyway!
I only know a couple of the big firms that have there own datacentres and big cash flows host in Australia...
Sydney itself has a shocking structor for broadband even within the city!
Example a company i work at has Frame Relay (ATM) on a 600 meg link, peer to peer and internet! The max they get is 2mbit.. Cable at home and in business is also nothing to be proud of! At least the @HOME service is better that Telstra 3 gig a month limit ( Yeah start laughing all you people over seas)
I though the southern cross (pipe) would finaly bring cheaper bandwidth and faster broadband into our homes and business but it still seems that the main providers being Telstra havnt had the ADSL system up more than 89 % of the time this last year!
Not only are the home users effected but also big business... I was planning to have a box in EXODUS which i can see from my window at the moment 'What once was' the new datacentre in Sydney (top ryde)
Until we catch up to the rest of the world, i will eer host a box in Australia for medium business that need that solution! And trust me they will pay at least 4 times the amount they would of paid over seas!
Thanks,
sgwilks 02-28-2002, 05:07 PM Thanks for the advise.OK so i need a US host,i know that this forum can recommend hundreds of hosts but who do the Aussies host with in USA.I need 25MB space, cgi bin, control panel bandwidth requirement isnt a huge need as site is a new online store selling approx 20 items,so wont be too busy for a while.
Cheers Steve.

Well... you should take a look at www.hostonce.com.au ... ghehehe :stickout
They offer UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH for only 9.95 AUS $ per month !!
... sure ;)
AussieHosts 02-28-2002, 06:53 PM Choppy, Sydney still has the advantage of being a few hops closer to the rest of the world because of the gateway there. Though it's not not unusual to bounce off a few other states, even before hopping in and out of Sydney when one is located there themself. :-)
It is still possible to do it cost effectively here, disregarding loss leaders like Optus. Pacific, Davnet, connect.com...they all offer decent arrangements. It's all in the way you move your data. Data transfer limits are small in comparasion with the rest of the world because most data centres have to compensate for the incoming data costs. We work one on one know with developers who couldn't find a better deal locally. But they don't run hundreds of MB's up to the server. Their email in most cases is handled overseas and they do all testing locally on their own system. By keeping their uploads to a bare minimum, there is as much, if not more, outgoing data provision than they could use.
Drop me a line again and I'll give you my number, and we'll have a chat about what some of your best options are down here.
Cheers
