We used to be with Hostpro and we loved them. But then that stupid merger with Interland.

We haven't suffered any major crashes or anything yet, but personally I'm quite disappointed with their service, support, and everything altogether.

We just bought a dedicated server and I'm quite disappointed. I'm not really a great techie or anything, but I've noticed some big differences. One of them is that we don't have root access. Is this common? I mean this is a dedicated server, it's only US. why not?

Second, I had to "request" mySQL setup and they put it on a SHARED mySQL server. Is this also common? I thought they were going to put the database on OUR server.

I'm thinking maybe I just had misconceptions about dedicated hosting. I was hoping that there would be OBVIOUS prerequisites.

Now, I'm not even sure if they have Perl and PHP installed.

I'm worried. Should I be? Does anyone have any past experiences to share? I've did a search on the forum regarding Interland, but most of those were about Shared Hosting. I'm wondering about dedicated hosting.

I don't have any experiences with real hosting, only redirected domain access from namecheap.com..........

The dedicated server you have doesn't sound like a good dedicated server deal to me. You should have unlimited access to your box.

Did you sign a long term deal?

Brandon

PS - Cubed, thanks for letting us know you have nothing to contribute. LOL!

Had a Cobalt with Vservers, which became Hostpro, which got the dump taken on them when the Hostpro/Interland deal happened..

They wanted to migrate me to a more spendy box that was not a Cobalt, which would have made migration a real headache, not to mention the price and a VERY stupid migration team made my decision to leave pretty easy.

Wound up at RackShack, very happy with box, have full access (as it should be with a dedicated) If I had a dedicated and they did not allow root access and had the db on a shared machine, I'd be wondering VERY hard if I were actually on a true dedicated and not a virtual dedicated.. which would be a major rip off..

Run.. don't walk away from Interland! They suck!

Vservers = Excellent service, repond time.
->Micron = still good.
->HostPro = signs are showing they'll soon sucks
->Interland = 100% sure they sucks "Big Time"

Main reason maybe they are growing bigger, so they don't care much for little clients like me anymore. They even stop supporting the so called "legacy" package and still charge me $95/month for a 250MB shared hosting with no DNS service!

Run, run, run!

I've never been an Interland customer myself, but we do have several Interland "refugees" who were not impressed with Interland and decided to leave over service issues.

About the fact that you don't have root access to your server - this may be a "standard" thing they do. IIRC, HostPro offered managed dededicated servers where your only access to the server was through a control panel, but if you needed anything else, you would have to call them up and they would do it for you. Is it possible that they've set you up with something like this?

Also - I just checked out their web site. From what you describe, it sounds like you're on one of their "Interland Accelerator" plans, which is their version of a managed and in the product description it states:

Each Accelerator plan includes the following features: • Administration page - GUI tool to manage your hosting account. With this tool you are able to create new users, edit user permissions, and more.

In any event, I would call them up and demand to know what's going on with your server. PHP, CGI, MySQL - these all should be pretty standard, especially on a Linux server. No doubt, you're paying premium pricing (just because it's Interland), so make them work for their money :)

thank you all for your replies. yes we are paying high prices, 5k+ a year. :(

Yes, we are using the accelerator. I wish I didn't rely so heavily on the fact that our hostpro server was awesome and that interland should be no less awesome. We still have the same support guy we've had for 2 years now. I trusted him. :( However, I think that he too is disappointed with Interland.

Unfortunately, we did prepay about a year. Perhaps in the summer, we'll move. Because it's an eduational site, we can't risk a transfer during the year. Summer, perhaps. We'll duke it out until then.

I agree, the price isn't worth it.

thank you jay. your explanation and reasoning is clear. I just wish Interland used that "standard".

Henrychoo: how can you say hostpro will starting sucking? it doesn't exist right now! it hasn't existed since last august.

so depressing. oh well, i'm going to start hunting and hopefully we'll find someone better by summer. if anyone has recommendations, let me know! i had rackspace in mind, btw. :)

we hung in there.

if you use their DSS form, and pay $$ (100+) they respond within a few hours. but we got that fee waived. in terms of uptime and stuff, it's good. it's when you need support you're kinda lost.

not my first choice, but not horrible either.
