How often should a host change the design of their site?

Are you tired of seeing the same look for years?

What do you think

I'd say it depends on wheter or not the hosts current site converts or not. If it does a good job in converting the visitors into customers, then you should be VERY carefull to change the layout of the site.

I think most webmasters are always finetuning their sites, I know I am :D

all the time until you reach perfection in every possible way.

 Really?

There is something to be said about stability and functionality.

Agreed, make a webpage that suits your needs and build from that.

If you keep on changing and changing frequently it will be harder and harder to make it functional and nore stable.

maybe once every couple of years......
but it really depends on the site...

I have seen sites that i really liked the look and feel of, and then I was very disappointed when it was later changed..........

I say change it till it becomes effective.. And every few months after that.... Maybe around 6....

It depends. I'd say ... when the webmaster feels like it ;)

Depends what kind of site it is. For a hosting site, I'd say keep tweaking the site until you feel it converts well, then just "refresh" it every month with minor changes/specials/news announcements etc.

I also own a retail gift site. I give it a "refresh" every couple of weeks, and a full make-over every 6 months. But that's because it would become stale to the repeat visitor. That is, considering it's a retail gift site...that needs constant change to keep the visitor's attention.

But a hosting site? A good stable consistent design. Does the job. IMHO.

Changing just for the sake of changing is never a good idea. A website is designed to get sales. If it is not fulfulling that purpose, they a redesign would be in order.

Of course, there are lots of little changes that have to be made to keep a site up-to-date. If you've had the same look for a long time, there's nothing wrong with freshing it up.

We're just getting ready to launch our new site onto the world after nearly 2 years with the current design.

Ideally you change a business site as little as possible. A few small alterations here and there (updating details etc), but overall people should see the same look everytime you hit the site. That way they recognize the business as being consistant and stable. Customers also like to know where things are and not have to search a new site every few months to get where they want to be.

Having said that, once in a while design will date and needs to rebuild to keep up with modern trends in design and function (what we're about to do). Our site is around a year and a half old now and is starting to look like it. The end result will still have the same general feel to it though.

If I hit a business site that looked new every month, I'd be wondering why they can't make up their mind on what to show people as their corporate image.

I'm all for the change as little as possible regarding the look of the site. Our new site has a very similar visual theme to it, you can instantly recognise it as being KDA still. We've just basically changed the menus and added lots more content and made it more accesible.

As ReneC said, if your site converts well, you should be extremely careful about changing your sites design.

And look at it this way... Do car companies change their logo every year? No not really. Personally I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with constantly keeping your web site up to date by making little changes, but I wouldn't do a whole new design because I would fear that it might scare people who are used to the old one away.

Hi!
I guess hosts must not change the look regularly.
One should focus on maturing the content over time..
That really helps..
Add new things and make the sites easier ...
We are all used to the way yahoo looks and it looks the same for a real long time now... Only that a lot more content and sections have been added..

Have a great day :)
