Hey, it may be a slight-bit off topic, but it concerns many of us in one way or another...

Cogent's buying PSInet...

http://washington.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2002/02/25/daily19.html

I know some former PSInet boys and they say it's a hell of an operation. This should add value to Cogent.

Someone should tell the Washington Business Journal that cogent's URL is www.cogentco.com, not www.cogent.com. ;)

Cogent needs to get on the ball and buy Cogent.com out!

Not exactly breaking news :) been talked about to death for the last couple of months. Interesting news maybe :)

It's breaking when they sign a deal. They also are bidding on 3 datacenters.

If Cogent is running hosting centers, who knows what dc pricing is going to do (I.E. downward spiral and then another Exodus)

By buying PSINet, does it mean that Cogent would have an overall improved performance on their network? What do you think their intention to bid on other datacenters?

PSINet is built completely unlike Cogent in that Cogent runs OC-48 MAN's per 24 clients. I'm speculating that Cogent either wants PSInet for the backbone, or to service their clients that connect via traditional means like T1, DS3, etc, or both.

It's like buying Peanut Butter for $.05 when you like ham. You do it because the price is right and you can do something with it.

This humble author's opinion only.

I just want to point out that Data Center Wire had this story before Washington Business Journal :).

The biggest complaint people have about Cogent (aside from the concern about their financial viability) is their peering. Buying the PSINet backbone will give them much of the peering they need.

It's the same reason Aleron purchased the old AGIS backbone, instant peering.

Good point regarding peering. I'd still short the stock. :-)

Me too, if I hadn't lost all my money investing in Enron :D

I'm using the profits I made shorting Enron. (Wait, did I say that in a public forum?? NO, I did not have connections! :))

Drew

P.S. I never shorted Enron.

Well, it will be interesting to see how long they last now after this transition. I'm looking forward to the increased transit/peering, however. :)

I don't know about many of you, but this is brings back memories. Didn't we just have this conversation last year when they bought out NetRail. NR always had one of the highest rated networks around. I have yet to see an improvement with Cogent since the full integration.

We have been long-time Cogent supporters and users. While we choose to do the majority of our BW needs with top tier 1s, Cogent helps with the high BW needs. Hopefully this was a good move with Cogent. Seems like an all or nothing approach to me though.

Wonder who will end up buying Cogent once they go bankrupt and sell out?

PSI has had problems the last 12 months with their peering anyhow (high fee's being added, some of it turned off, etc) so I wonder how much still exist.

Well, if the same thing happens to them that happened to PSINet, I will skip lunch for a week and buy them :)

That's a bad sign. Do you think it had anything to do with their recent purchase of PSINet?

If what TomK said is true that PSINet's having problem in their peering, I think Cogent's just made a blunder. How much money do they have now left to burn?

It is actually fairly common for the stock price of an acquiring company to fall after a merger annoncement. If the stock price hasn't risen by the time the merger is completed, then it is a bad sign.

Back to $3.15 now which is quite good again. Actually, it's better than Level 3's stock which is at $2.99 :)

Wasn't there a PSINet Stadium or Convention Center? If so, does that mean that it will now be Cogent Stadium?

The old memeorial stadium, in Baltimore, was renamed PSINet Stadium. But that is in the process of being dismantled:
