Can Raid be used on the RaQ3? If so, how? I cannot find any documentation on this.

Download the latest RaQ4r OS Restore ISO from the Cobalt FTP site, and burn the CD. Install two identical harddrives in your RaQ3. Depending on your model, that may or may not be possible. You most certainly will have to acquire a second hard drive cradle, and your specific motherboard may or may not be able to accomodate two HD's. You're on your own here, it really depends on when your RaQ3 was manufactured. Use the RaQ4r OS CD to restore your RaQ. Voila', a RaQ3 with RAID1. Effectively though, your RaQ is now a RaQ4r running at 300Mhz. SUN INSISTS YOU MUST REFER TO THIS BOX BY ITS ORIGINAL FACTORY CONFIGURATION. SO NO MATTER HOW YOU UPGRADE IT, IT MUST ALWAYS BE REFERRED TO AS A RAQ3. (That'll keep you out of trouble, and hopefully keep Sun/Cobalt satisfied enough that they allow all of us hardware hackers to keep restoring the old hardware with the newer OS's.) Brandon BooBoo 02-27-2002, 03:34 PM Thanks for the info! I have already upgraded my RaQ3's to RaQ4 OS. However, when you say that the hard drives must be identical, does this mean capacity & type? We have some old HDs in these boxes (10 Gb). We cannot find those anymore. We can find 30Gb or higher. If I understand what you wrote, this would not work. We would have to buy two identical HDs for each RaQ3. Or we can move two of the HDs to two boxes and only buy 4 HDs for the other two boxes. Thanks! cbtrussell 02-27-2002, 03:53 PM I have looked through some old notes and it appears that the raid will only work on a RaQ3i, not a plain RaQ3. You will want to verify that before you spend any money. Also, I know the HD's must be exactly the same size, but not 100% sure about the make and model. You'll have to look around for that info. I suspect it may work with different brand drives, but typically you wouldn't want to in order to minimize any compatability issues between the two. HTH, Brandon |
