I wonder how much forum users at one time is server able to handle without overload.

For ex such specs:

AMD Burton 3000 / 512 RAM
Celeron 2,4 / 512 RAM
Pentium 2,8 / 1G RAM (non HT)
Double Xeon 2,4 / 1GB RAM (HT)

It is just not a matter of the cpu. You are going to have to look at the disk IO.

Is mysql on a seperate drive or not?
SATA? SCSI? IDE?

All of those make huge performance changes.
