Equilibrium 02-27-2002, 04:09 AM How much hours of sleep do you get?
Running your site or business can be very time consuming!
How much hours of sleep do you usually get a day?
hmmm
 (Thinking)
MCHost-Marc 02-27-2002, 04:18 AM About 5 hours. Sleeping more than 5 hours is bad for your health :)
Sharpnet 02-27-2002, 04:19 AM Your servers too!
5 hours sleep is bad? How's that? Don't quite get it... I thought it's the more sleep the better... unless I've got it the wrong way round in high school!? :D
cyansmoker 02-27-2002, 04:34 AM Between four and five hours...
and I am too old for this, so it's killing me :eek4:
mdrussell 02-27-2002, 05:52 AM I normally get around ~7 hours sleep...
HRBrendan 02-27-2002, 06:00 AM It is like 5am and for some god awful reason 4 of us are still here :(

Happy to see someone with the same idea.
There are 2 persons voted for less than 4 hours. I am one of them.
Converting ASP programs to PHP from 3 days ago I have worked around 21 hours each day.

get life man, if this is your daily schedule then you will get sick soon. 6 hours sleep is minimum and required for good working reset of time. oh yeah, if you take sex daily then sleep between 6 to 8 hours is necessary for your body. ;)
by the way I get sleep for around 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours daily. :) some days before I use to sleep less say for about less then 6 hours and got sick. :(
anyway, only sleeping is not important, how good was your sleep is also important. if you sleep in very quite and cool atmosphere ( I guess more of western countries are cool) then 5-6 hours sleep is also good as 7- 8 hours. :)
NicoV 02-27-2002, 08:31 AM lol, i'm a student at uni so i get about 10 hours by "freeing up" my study schedule ;)
USATODAY ran a story a few weeks ago.
Basically it said "we were wrong, your body doesn't need 8 hours sleep a night, and it may actually be bad for you!"
4 to 5 hours for me is more then enough.
tjk
redjackryan 02-27-2002, 09:55 AM I suppose sleeping back in the server bays doesnt qualify as restful sleep then? I somehow manage to keep going on something between 4 and 6 hours a night .. My fiance on the other hand could and has slept for 10 hours or better at a stretch.
Went to bed @ 5 AM last night .. woke up @ 6:30 because I had a bad dream went back to bed at 7:00 and woke up @ 8 AM for the day.. thats my schedule :)
ToastyX 02-27-2002, 11:16 AM Sleep? What's that?
NexDog 02-27-2002, 01:07 PM I love this thread!
Sleep is overrated, I just keep going & going!
I find I don't sleep from Wednesday to Sunday and it's killing me. :) When I have 10 chats going, I'm cursing the day I dreamt of going in to this business but then when all is quiet, I really miss the craziness. And now we have people to look after the chat night shift and I'm still up talking to them from the other side!!!!
Shoot me before my wife does.
Equilibrium 02-27-2002, 01:52 PM I love this thread too!
:)
Because I started it this morning and I'm back now only got 4 hours sleep
he he
This is really hard
Cephren 02-27-2002, 02:14 PM Hosting companies should pay us even more for our sleeplessness. All the stress, worries, work etc.
Lets form a union (haha)
Perfecthost 02-27-2002, 03:18 PM I have sort of a strange sleeping schedule. If I sleep for an hour, sometimes two, my eyes pop open and I have this overpowering urge to check email. I seem to never sleep more than 1 to 2 hours in a stretch, but when I add it up it comes to about 5 or 6 hours a day total. Anybody else do this?
DjPaj 02-27-2002, 04:05 PM I would like to sleep, but damn work and school, isn't college life supposed to be the best years of your life??? Noooooooo not for me, I have to work full-time and live off campus, so while all my friends are partying their butts off, checking out all the college hotties out there, good ol' me is stuck at work. Yeah fun whoohoo
Elena 02-27-2002, 05:18 PM 3-4 hours tops.. it's not so bad once you get used to it. Now if I sleep longer than 4 hours I wake up grumpy.
Equilibrium 02-27-2002, 05:45 PM Most web host owners develop sleep disorders along with allot of other disorders
:D
It's kind of sad though especially when your not making that much profit!
Alan - Vox 02-27-2002, 06:41 PM I can easly sleep 12 hours a day, i can sleep for Scotland.
Phrozen 02-27-2002, 07:15 PM Sleep??? I've had maybe 3 hours since Sunday. I'm really starting to hate high school...
Anyway, I usually get around 4 hours of sleep a night, but not lately...
Tallon 02-28-2002, 04:05 AM I usually get between 3.5 - 7 hours of sleep depending on the night. I get so tired my eyes start to burn and decide I really need some sleep. Once I'm in bed I start thinking things like 'What if a server goes down and everyone else is sleeping too?' 'What if CPanel craps out again?' I just can't seem to go from work mode to sleep mode well at all. I really need to learn how to shut the brain off and stop stressing myself out with all of the what if's.
I go with severe lack of sleep for about 4 or 5 days, by then I'm feeling so worn out that I just pass out for 8 or 9 hours. This is one business that sure can take it's toll on you after awhile.

The people getting 8 hours of sleep are older than the ones getting 6-7 hours, so yes, they are going to die first.

Mahinder, I know your company very well.
I am sure you have not always been in this situation (I mean when you had started your company).

Roy@ENHOST 03-06-2002, 11:24 AM Well, Im the sleeping donkey.
I have always admired people who can cope with sleeping less because I myself cant do that !
I sleep like 12 hours a day. Partly because I dont get 100 signups a day.
If I wake up after less than 6 hours of sleep I will get grumpy and I will have dark rings around my eyes.
Dylan 03-06-2002, 10:45 PM  what about those that don't know
I have an analytical mind and can lie in bed for say 10 hours and then only after this time I'll get about say 30 minutes actual sleep
I try and make up my sleep on Sunday's, but it doesn't work, ie. after lying in bed for 19 hours, I feel &$#@^%
:bawling:
cbaker17 03-06-2002, 11:23 PM A nice cup of hot chocalate with mini marshmellows usually does the trick for me.
kunal 03-06-2002, 11:39 PM i sleep for 3-4 hours every alternate night :D
richy 03-07-2002, 06:19 AM i sleep from about 7 am to about 9.30am on week days longer at weekends. used to be time sifted earlier but with more us contacts its shifted forwards. never needed much sleep and 6-8 hours on a weekend sets me right for the next week. sometimes get chance to catch a few zs in the afternoons.
Mester 03-07-2002, 11:24 PM Except Friday-Saturday & Saturday-Sunday, I am usually in bed by midnight, asleep an hour later and up at either 6 or 7 depending on the day. (6 on monday, tues, thurs, 7 wed & fri morning).
I bet youre all glad to hear my daily sleep schedule :D
IGobyTerry 03-07-2002, 11:51 PM I get around 10 hours of sleep a day. Saturdays and Sundays a lot less though. Cause on the weekdays I sleeps from about 11PM to 6AM, and then I sleep from 7:30 to 8:30 in school, and then again from about 1:10 to 2:20 in school again. I have like the easiest schedule in school, cause the afternoon is all study halls except for history (Which I have to dress up for tomorrow... gotta be a defense attorney in the re-enactment of the Dreyfus Trial) and then in the mornings I start off with Spanish And Biology which I sleep in. Probably explains my low grades in those two classes, but oh well.
ProSam 03-08-2002, 01:29 AM I try to sleep at least 7 hours a day. If not I will feel horrible the whole day.
Roy@ENHOST 03-08-2002, 02:24 AM EXACTLY !!! I will feel like Im a dried prune, dehydrated and all ****ty.

When a person doesnt sleep for more than 2 days they will haev hallucination of some sort. Like seeing spiders all around you, suspect someone is following you. You'll become oversensitive and paranoid!

Studio64 03-09-2002, 02:45 AM I'm buggered running a Win98 server running Xitami...
So I sleep as long as it's up & running... So I'm averaging just about 55 minutes of sleep a night :)
Dear God... I'm glad I'm kidding
HTML-Guru 03-09-2002, 03:28 AM hmmm.......sunday through thursday i get 5 hours of sleep at best ;) and friday thru saturday i stay up all night and sleep for maybe 2 hours.

You talking about me! What do me mean oversensitive? :D
And stop following me will you or I'll call the police. I mean it, I really do, and if you keep hiding spiders in my printer, I'll...I'll...I'll......get away from me!

baileysemt123 03-10-2002, 02:57 AM If left to its own devices (ignoring schedules, phone calls, and related "emergencies"), my body seems to prefer 8.5-10 hrs. of sleep in a 24 hour period, this includes at night & maybe a nap during the day.
I always have to get at least 7 too, otherwise I am crabby and can't concentrate well and feel rotten physically, all day long! And if I am short on sleep for multiple nights, I get really sick and then am of no use, to anybody! :(
If I get less than 7 or over 10 I get a migraine. If I have a migraine from another cause, the only thing that really helps is sleep, like today I ended up sleeping >14 hours because I have a migraine from the bad weather and a looooooooong road trip yesterday (business, ugh). Tonight I will still sleep a good 7-8 hours though.
I love my bed. :D I love sleeping. I just wish I had more time to sleep and the phone wouldn't keep ringing.
:D Bailey
liquidknight 03-10-2002, 01:00 PM About 7 hours on average..
Least sleep i can get is 1 hour..
Most sleep I can get is 10 hours...
Tim Greer 03-10-2002, 02:42 PM Wow, you people are crazy - and no wonder!
Seriously though... you're crazy...
I feel like I've been up for a month if I don't get at least 5 hours. I usually sleep about 6 or 7 hours. All this talk about habits, checking email -- that sounds like addiction to me (if it's that frequent anyway). All this talk about what health organizations claim -- don't count on it. Eggs are good they are bad, they are good again, bad again, good again (but only the white part), bad again, good again, etc. You need 'this much' of 'this' vitamin , too much of 'this' vitamin will harm you. Aspirin is good for you -- nope, it's not so good after all. Mammogram's can save your life -- actually, maybe not... wait, yes, they can. Lead goblets are fancy and wealthy people should drink out of them to show their high stature. I wouldn't screw around with my sleep by what the newest claim is, it's not worth it. It's pretty simple -- don't sit on your ass all day. Get out, get up and do something, eat well and it'll all fall into place.
There's no standard for sleep people need -- each person needs different hours of real, good, deep sleep. Some people can do more and some can do less. I promise you people, if you get out and exercise, get a weight set or something and work out for 1 or 2 hours a day, roughly 3 or 4 hours before you go to sleep, or when you wake up, you'll get tired, you will sleep well and you will fall into whatever amount of hours you need. Sitting at a computer all day, worrying about missing emails (not that I haven't done that), will mess you up. I wonder how many people here have a tan? Maybe 5%? MAYBE! I've work the long, stressful hours, and I can deal with it, but only up to a point. I've pulled 42 hour shifts. However, maybe I'm old (I just turned 30), but for the last few years, if I am up for over 18 hours, I start getting tired and if I'm up all day into the next, I can't think clearly -- it's obvious my body wants to sleep (even if my mind doesn't want to (even if my mind is mush)). Of course, of I don't work out and just sit there like a sloth, I'd probably easily be able to get only 3 hours sleep.
Elena 03-10-2002, 07:09 PM Tim.. you're right. Don't listen to what the scientists say.. if you do some research you'll find that scientists once said that smoking was good for your health! hah...
anyway.. I think I sleep very good usually, so 4 hours of sleep is way more than enough. I think I posted in this thread before about how I wake up grumpy if I sleep over that 4 hours.. listen to your body. If you feel tired there is something wrong and you need more sleep.. if you wake up full of energy even after 3 hours of sleep (which happens to me quite often) then I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe when I get to my 30's 6 hours will be more of what I need.. but right now 4 seems just right. Just listen to your body.. if you don't you'll be looking towards burnout soon and that is definetely not good.
I could probably use a little more exercise each day... but those darn video games, they are so addictive. The more I play them the more I feel like sleeping.. *wonders if video games have some power to suck the energy out of you* I just got a new game and I've been napping alot more lately.. strange
Tim Greer 03-10-2002, 07:17 PM What!? Crap! I was thinking about taking up smoking too! Well, I guess I can still start drinking, that's good for you, right? A glass of wine each night? Heh. Anyway, I know what you mean, and I do agree with what some doctors suggest -- and that's if you don't sleep well and you are awake all day, just take a nap for a little while if you can. People don't need a doctor or health scientist to tell them that sleep is a vital thing and that it's an individual thing based on many factors (the person, their health, their eating habits, high or low stress day, a day of excercise or being lazy, a coffee drinker, a sugar freak, etc., etc.) -- and we don't need to be told that a few months or years of chronic bad sleeping habits can do serious damage to your body and mind. If I couldn't sleep because I was worried about email, etc., I'd just find another line of work. It's seriously not worth it, nothing is -- well, maybe some things, but I'd never become an ER doctor because of that. :-)

Sure sometimes you have to wake up at 3 in the morning because something has gone seriously wrong with a server.. but that doesn't happen every day and if it does you aren't managing things very well.. imho
Tim Greer 03-10-2002, 07:28 PM Good point, after all, so many people are going at it alone for a little while to build up their business. This line of work is pretty unforgiving. Hopefully though, it'll not be too long for them. I know I'd have to be on constant page 24/7 every day to deal with emergencies... oh, wait. *L*
And, for the record, I need a tan -- real bad!
Equilibrium 03-11-2002, 12:56 AM Wow !
This poll really got a good response !
:)
Tim Greer 03-11-2002, 01:01 AM True. However, asking people involved in web hosting and Internet issues and that line of work of how much sleep they get, is like going to an Over Eaters Anonymous meeting and asking how much everyone eats. :-)
