Can some kind sole (or even soul) explain to me a few things about the RaQ3 control panel?

The bit I don't get is what bits are accessible by the different users - I've played around with a demo one but I don't think that's quite representative of what actually happens.

If you set up a site for someone, how much can THEY control themselves? Looking at the demo there seems to be three levels of the CP, but when the middle level seems to be able to grant telnet access it seems somewhat pointless to bother as surely that would let someone mess royally with the workings of the server, no? The bottom level seems to control virtually nothing, with the exception of auto-reply to emails.

I suppose what I'm asking is if you sell virtual hosting to someone, would you give them access to anything but the bottom level?

On a separate point, anyone got any opinions on the wise-ness of running a database-intensive MySQL/PHP site with (at the moment) no hits on a RaQ3? How long before i'm going to need to be upgrading the server to something more...er...beefy? Would a Raq3 with 256MB RAM be okay with a few thousand hits a day on one DB intensive site?

Cheers,
Mark

There's really only two, and you must be counting the small interface that plain users can log into to change their passwords, foward email, etc. ( http://domain.com/personal )?

The two basic ones are: ServerAdmin CP and SiteAdmin CP. The server one allows you to set up domains through the CP, set diskspace for the site, etc.

The SiteAdmin CP allows the customer to set up users off the site, and various services. They cannot grant themselves telnet if you didn't set the site up to allow it.

I think it would be fine with 256MB ram for a few thousand hits. More ram the better of course, but 256 should do ya'.

I plan on opening a small host for a number of gaming sites. Assuming no one puts huge demos online, just a forum and screenshots maybe a movie here or there at each site, how many do you think I'll be able to fit without killing it?

Chicken,

Thanks for the info. I was counting the /personal as the third section yeah.

So the site admin page would be accessible by the user? Right, cool.

As for the RAM, well, it'll be starting off with 32MB (can ya guess where I'm getting it from?) but will probably upgrade to 128MB as soon as it starts taking any serious number of hits, then to 256 as time goes by.

What's the max RAM you can get into a RaQ3?

Thanks,
Mark

Don't count on 32 lasting you all that long (not long enough to endure close to a serious number of hits). I think you realize this.

Max. is 512 I believe.

Really, there's no answer to this. You can't assume anything, and even if you had 10 servers, each would end up having a different number of sites on them.

If you are just using one server then you can't shift sites around as needed. Plan on about 100, and if things are ok, then add 20 more, etc. I really don't see a way to come up with an actual number or range really (without being overly simplistic).

Good enough for me. I didn't know too much about these servers before last week and was just looking for a rough estimate. I was planning on 50-60 per server, so I guess this is good news.

About the RAM, 4webspace.com only mentions an upgrade to 256MB. I'll have to ask them about going higher if possible.
