For the domains that are on-hold, if they don't get registered again by the original owners, when do they get deleted (so that we can register them for ourselves)?

the first indication as to when it may drop is to have a look at the domain name whois and see who it is registered with.

the different registrars have different policies for dropping domain names which are past their expiry date and are on hold.

It is registrered with NetworkSolutions.com, when do you think it will be released?

sorry, but if it is network solutions, you could be waiting a very very long time.

They dont have a formal policy for deleting names, could be 6 months, a year, maybe even two years. They are well known for holding onto names for a long time.

I see expired domain names registered through Network Solutions that still work. I think they delete them like on a certain day each year.

As has already been stated, NetSol has no policy on when they drop domain names. If you would like to complain about this, go to icann.org and file a formal complaint.
