http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=maximum+characters+in+a+domain+name&btnG=Google+Search

When in doubt, google it.

From the first result in that search...
The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!" are NOT permitted.

You cannot end or begin with a hyphen.

You domain name must contain between 3 and 64 characters.

I think I would get carpel tunnel by the time I typed in that many characters. If you observe the drops many of them are extremely long...wonder why they dropped?

Nice information, never thought about the issue regarding maximum characters for .com domain names.

Is it only for .com? or same with .net and .org?

I think the 63 rule goes across the board for all extensions, but don't quote me on that =p
