View Full Version : No FTP - no php, no script hosting?

It seems every day the threat of spam gets worse and the never ending
lineup of scripts which are process hogs just keeps growing.

I recently thought about making a CMS system where users get access to
a control panel to manage their website. That's it. No ftp, nothing
like that - just a ton of website templates to pick from and they can
name links, pick what they want on the site... have a forum, pick
add-on scripts and so on.

Anyone else considered this or care to comment?

Something like phpNuke?

Because personally I would like to place the stopper on spamming and scamming as well. And the best way that that could happen is to limit FTP access and also the way they send emails. Or make it hard for spammers to access the system.

I was thinking about that and e-mail would be webmail, and pop3 online - no SMTP access. If they needed that they can contact their ISP.

I just think it would keep people who don't want a website, but who just want to tinker, and play with things till they break away. Being more secure is just a bonus! :)

I can't wait to hear what people around here think - might be worth while.

We have been using a program for free webmail service. The program is called HiveMail. A little tweaking of the soiftware made us able to track out-going spam and scam messages and ban offending users.

Because its dangerous to let them have POP access, but a webmail interface on php can let the administrator monitor and filter out what gets sent or processed.

We have also developed a script that intregrates into the phpBB forum software ( And other scripts as well ). With this the users can Pull templates from a centralised area and even change that template's logo into their own :) ( I am a little "jumpy" on providing Client based FTP access after what happened to my organisation last year. )

By POP3 did you mean SMTP service? I don't see any harm in the pop3 side of things aside from a little bit more system resources.
