does any one know where i can find some resources on limiting what i can be liable for as the web designer? any help is greatly appreciated

There isn't any general rule and if there was it would depend on the laws where you're located. The best thing is to always have an agreement, if it is just an email, that specifies your responsibilities and liabilities, if any. If you're creating a web site that involves financial transactions, a formal contract is really really a good idea.
