Miva Merchant (in case you are rich :)

Also you can find out more about such open-source shopping cart as osCommerce (TEP or The Exchange Project).

It's free so probably it's not so *Cool* as Miva Merchant but if you have a problem, you can always rely on quick response and advice in osCommerce forum.

yes this looks nice but pretty templateish
and not very customizable. the demo at miva only gave 2 templates to use. The back end , like the site stats looked terrible, I guess you would have to export them to excell of access to get a decent graph or chart. I just wanted something with some fancy looking stats for my storeowners to use that was simple and browser based cause most of them don't know anything about comuters.

We're hosting several hundred clients who are perfectly happy with osCommerce (formerly TEP).

When it comes to customization, however, it's definitely geared toward those who have some solid experience with PHP and editing raw HTML.

We've never been too impressed with Miva Merchant.

Check out that Interchange Cart!!:D

Just a joke, people. Put down the stones slowly and walk away.;)

I am interested in this also. If you know of a low cost cart, it would be best. Miva's price makes my head hurt.

It was actually slow and too costly to offer to people. If you are willing to spend ~$3000 on a shopping cart system. Take a look at oscommerce.com, hop on their developer list and ask if someone will make the changes you want to the system. This would give you what you want and it would be within your budget.

Cheers!

We're in the midst of a project with http://x-cart.com/ . Their cart seems pretty powerful and inexpensive. Once our project is finished (ETA- this wednesday) we'll let you know if we're happy or not.

Successful, we would very interested in hearing your feedback on x-cart. We are currently evaluating them and two others to see which we like the best.

Ok I know that Interchange is kinda buggy in cpanel, but once set up isn't it pretty nice? It seems to have everything under the sun.

They are in the midst of a building a cart for us. They delayed the ETA date twice due to technical problems etc. We'll give a very detailed review once the project is completed. So far they seem to be very talented programmers......

with oscommerce can you have multiple product options.

For example

a t-shirt that has size options and different color choices for that shirt.

maybe layed out as drop down menus? I did'nt see any stores that had their cart layed out like that. It seemed that you had to create seperate listings for each varible. I am I right by assuming this?

I've used Merchant Order Form (www.merchantorderform.com) for years and I think that it's one of the best carts. It is written in perl, will work with just about any current system and is easy to customise. Lots of docs included and only $29. Won't work for everyone, but worth a look.

X-cart does allow for multiple product options.

Yes, no problem. You can define your own options (for example you define for clothes the options colour and size) and you can add your own option values (colour: blue, green, yellow, size: S, M, L, XL, etc). Then, when adding your products, you can define what options are available for this particular product.

I checked out oscommerce and free anything scares me (bugggyness, constant upates to code, security holes, etc,) is there anything good that runs on MS SQL and MS ASP and not mysql and php?

like a standalone cart and not connected to any payment gateways, is not super generic looking, and can do offline sales (stores credit cards until processed)

the search for the holy grail continues...

You could try ClickCartPro. It's not free, but it's about the best I've seen as far as an out-of-the box solution (for the price). They even have a few skins on their site to change the whole look of the store. I've tried out commercecgi - and customizing it was less than friendly.

The code in clickcart is well written and easy to follow. It's written in Perl vs. PHP. Like I said, it's not for a huge site since it uses flatfile vs. MySQL for storing the store data.

I've just put up two sites using it and everyone seems happy.

You don't use Cpanel do you? Or Windows either huh?

Everything has bugs, actually open source has fewer I'd say, it allows people to find bugs that the developer might miss....

I've looked at X-Cart and it looked cool, how does it run, and how does the code look? Clean?

My host ing company does offer unix with these specs;
128 bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Server Side Includes (SSI)
Perl Scripting
PHP4 Scripting
CGI-BIN, Custom Script Execution
SMTP,IMAP, POP3, APOP Protocols
MySQL Database
Neo Mail
Chilisoft ASP Scripting

its just that I am more familiar with windows ASP and SQL - but if it means more choice and better products, hey I'm game!
