View Full Version : Turnkey Resellers acquired
ChrisBowd 02-16-2005, 11:03 AM Well, I guess it was on the cards for a while. Turnkey Resellers was just acquired by Digital Hosting Service LLC.
So does anyone know anything about Digital Hosting Service LLC or its CEO Thomas Smith ?
joshuayip 02-16-2005, 02:18 PM Really ? Hope things will be better soon for them

Marklittle 02-16-2005, 10:13 PM I googled "Digital Hosting Service LLC" and found nothing, but that was expected due to the words in their title being widely used. I was rather dissapointed to by the message the new president left, not only did it fail to explain what Digital Hosting Service LLC does(and I mean REALLY does), their website, or anything else about it, but it didnt cover various issues that have been taking place on and with turnkey.
Gavin Miller 02-17-2005, 03:08 AM Interesting...I had been wondering how long Turnkey would last judging by their announcements about dropping the accounts etc....

Robert Saylor's comments below:
Just a side note on this subject. As far as what "Robert" will be doing... I am not going anywhere. Tom will be the owner and I will be dealing mainly with Tom and the techs. This means new techs and customer/billing support will be coming online very soon. Tom will be taking the business to the next level making Turnkey a very large company. I do not want you the users to think I am turning my back on you. Currently, I am in the point in my life where this business has just overwelmed me and I need somebody like Tom and his team to keep it alive and take it to the next level.
What my job will be is fixing servers that are having issues, bringing new servers up, assistance in organizing a new network backup technology and general consultant work for Tom.
niyogi 02-17-2005, 05:28 AM Gavin and Andrew both are advertising Firehousehost - but then Gavin seems to be critiquing Digital Hosting Services and Thomas is posting as Andrew.
Is anybody else as confused as I - or am I just too impatient to dive in further?
Roj
FFEMT284 02-17-2005, 05:38 AM Sorry for the confusion :) i meant to put i copied that from the Turnkey site forums,
Gavin is not critiquing DHS he is commenting on how Turnkey was having issues with its servers recently
niyogi 02-17-2005, 05:44 AM Ah - thanks so much Andrew. Was getting confused - you definitely cleared it up for many. :-)
Good luck with Firehousehost!

FFEMT284 02-17-2005, 05:54 AM Thanks for the kind words :)
Business is going well for us
All word of mouth referrals but definately more business than i expected in the first few days.
Hamtramck Rick 02-17-2005, 01:39 PM Hi Andrew,
That's great that business is going so well, especially, since when I just checked your site the pricing pages were blank and the woman on the front page has no head.
redone 02-18-2005, 12:02 AM I wish I had a site that didn't have pricing links that worked and I was still doing well!
Good luck with your site.

Id like to apologize for any confusion about my previous post. I was simply commenting on Turnkey's downtime before being acquired, and my expectations about this coming. I didn't mean to make Digital Hosting Services sound bad....and definetly am not critiquing them, since I haven't used them.
Just wanted to clear that up.

How's the acquisition affecting Turnket Resellers' service? I am thinking of switching from my web host.
Hamtramck Rick 02-18-2005, 02:56 PM My general principle is that when one company buys out another, it is usually rough sledding for the users. Great promises are always made at the front end. I'm not making my predictions any more specific than that.

Looks like I will just have to strike Turnkey off my list then...

What? You mean that 5 DAY guarantee didn't sell you on turnkey's services?

I have been a long-time supporter of Turnkey and had an account with them for about 9 months. Up until the recent worm attack on one of their servers, the service was great, there was occassional downtime but I had nothing but genuine praise for them.
IMHO Turnkey's legacy problems were a lack of 24/7 support (to be fair Robert was honest and told people that Turnkey was a part-time job for him) and a lack of prentative maintenance (not surprising because managing 7 active servers and a dynaically growing business got to be more than a part-time job).
Turnkey now seems to have full-time support (tickets get answered even during the small hours of night) and ticket turnaround etc. is good. There are still some post-worm legacy problems which hopefully will soon be resolved.
If you are looking for a lot of space at a low price then Turnkey is a good deal. If you are running mission-critical sites that need 24/7 availability then I would advise watching Turnkey for a month and then PM me and I will give you an offline update.
Karthick 02-25-2005, 09:10 AM Is that the same Thomas Smith as the WHT "thomas.smith"?
desiredname 02-26-2005, 08:50 AM I don't know how it will go from here on out, but I had a pretty bad experience with them several months ago.
I signed up for service and was setup quickly with an excellent panel, great limits and an even better price. The problems started a few weeks later, when the server developed a bunch of glitches and various services started going up and down regularly. Robert is a really nice guy and kept us pretty well posted on what was going on... but there were a suprising number of problems in a short period of time.. including 4 days down due to a "fire in the server room," 3 days down due to a "cut line" and several multi-hour downtimes blamed on various odd and unusual misshaps.
I am NOT saying that turnkey is fraudulent, or even that they lied to me... maybe the guy just had some horrible luck. He was always ver nice and seemed to work pretty hard to make his customers happy and maybe an injection of cash from the buyer will allow them to offer a higher level of service.
I had to cancel, because I have too many customers and sites to be able to afford downtime, but NOBODY can offer you perfect service at anywhere near the prices that they have. If you need an inexpensive service, they may be perfect for you.
Again, let me state that I am NOT badmouthing anybody with turnkey, especially Robert. I wish everyone there much luck, but I always like to tell it how it is.
kelvinklay 02-26-2005, 04:28 PM lets see what turnkey do in the online business.
carolinahosting 03-02-2005, 11:46 PM Hi, didn't even see this. Well, I can say the service is now a lot better and our new server line that will be coming online this weekend will be that much better.
This is what we will start offering, 1 server has already been purchased and will be another later this month.
IBM xSeries
Dual Xeon 3.06 Ghz
6 GB RAM
6 x 146 GB SCSI Ultra 320 Hot-swap drives
IBM ServeRAID 6i
2 drives will be configured as a RAID 1 for the OS (RHEL 3 AS)
4 drives will be configured as a RAID 5EE for the data (users files)
This server will be a lot different from most standard IDE servers as the SCSI controller has it's own CPU so the server does not get bogged down.
Another new item is live support. For most of the day somebody is there to answer your call.
Also, we are starting to get 24/7 phone support. This is still in the works but is looking good.
Overall, Tom the new owner has made some impresive changes to better the service and will only get better.
shinta 04-13-2005, 11:04 PM Turnkey's site seems to be down. The domain resolves, but I timeout whenever I try to load the site, and I've tried numerous times now. My site that I host with Turnkey is also down. :(
Anyone else not able (or able) to access either Turnkey's forums or their own Turnkey hosted site? I would normally post issues on their forums, but I can't when it's down.
You know, the sad thing about this is, I'm not surprised. I've gotten so used to my Turnkey hosted site being down that whenever there are problems, I just shrug and wait it out. But that's not the way webhosting should work, right? Must... remember.... to get angry.... and complain.....
*sigh*
Workshop 04-14-2005, 03:25 AM Any Turnkey staff watching this post? If so let us know what is going on - everything - yep that's everything is down.
For hours and hours - please let us know what is happening....
Metatron 04-14-2005, 06:31 AM Down for almost 7 hours now.
Yapluka 04-14-2005, 06:53 AM Hi, I currently don't know exactly what happens but our local sysadmin is working on it.
I only know the server was under attack the night before and he could stop it. Maybe another stronger attack...
I'll keep you up to date as soon as I get some news, really sorry for this.
