I don't understand why this rule exists.
Why can't you have a link to a thread in your signature?

![]() | View Full Version : no links to threads in signatures? ub3r 02-15-2005, 10:56 PM I don't understand why this rule exists. Why can't you have a link to a thread in your signature? anon-e-mouse 02-16-2005, 08:04 AM The main reason being that someone has an ad in one of the offers forum, then goes to the main forums with a "One time only 90% off" (or some such stuff) link in their sig directing them to their ad in whichever forum and procedes to respond to topics mainly to get their sig seen. So basically getting more than one ad per week (in some cases 20+ per day). So to be on the safe side, we make it for all signatures so Ms/Mr 90% off can't say, "well mikey has a link to a thread in his sig, so why can't I?" mmaaaaattt 02-16-2005, 08:49 AM You just answered that question, anon-e-mouse. When Mrs. 90% off asks your unlikely question, simply direct them to this thread, or more specifically, to your explanation. The rule is irrational. Hands-on Mark 02-16-2005, 08:57 AM mikey you had this right? And got a warning for it? (I didn't report you, but I saw the link, it was like "I'm not ub3r anymore, click here to see why" or something...) mmaaaaattt 02-16-2005, 08:59 AM Originally posted by Camp2Win mikey you had this right? Granted, a lame/attention seeking ploy to add to one's signature, but the rule remains irrational none the less. ub3r 02-16-2005, 10:35 AM What about modifying the rule to only outlaw links to commercial threads? I seem to remember some people linked to the old MOTM threads in their signatures, while MOTM was happening on a regular basis. Originally posted by Camp2Win mikey you had this right? Four points. adam 02-16-2005, 11:11 AM Yea I think this rule is bogus to, should be changed.. Hands-on Mark 02-16-2005, 05:52 PM The rules should be changed that you cannot link to a sale thread, or something you are advertising. I do not see the harm in your link mike, but it will not be undone and you still have 26 points left to gain before a ban. Anyway, I had 4 points for "Free image hosting" link I put in my signature...because it contained the price. O well, best to just move on. Chicken 02-17-2005, 10:26 AM Originally posted by Camp2Win Anyway, I had 4 points for "Free image hosting" link I put in my signature...because it contained the price. Well, "free" is a price, just as "$10/mo. image hosting" would be, but it's the one pricing that we permit at HHO. I've wrestled with that issue though here and there for years. I once thought I'd remove them (since it was pricing) and thought I was smart by searching for "free" in people's signatures, however it turns out there's this thing called "FreeBSD" and thus the results were less than exact. DOH! I know this is OT (not exactly about the link thing), but that comment caught my eye. Hands-on Mark 02-17-2005, 04:22 PM Well, it's like posting "WEB HOSTING" in your signature. That is what it is, free image hosting. But, I have since moved on. SoftWareRevue 02-17-2005, 05:28 PM No. It would be like placing 'Free' Web Hosting in your sig. You're welcome to place "Image Hosting' in your signature file. Just not 'Free' Image Hosting. *Back on Topic . . . I don't think it's a very far stretch to equate links in signatures with cross-posting.Cross-Posting is not allowed here. Cross-posting refers to posting new duplicate threads or posts, or the linking to threads or posts they have already started.Would you say that "no cross-posting" is an unreasonable expectation? Hands-on Mark 02-17-2005, 05:53 PM SWR, I guess you are right. Would it be wrong to have "Paid Web Hosting" ? ub3r 02-17-2005, 05:57 PM I don't think it's a very far stretch to equate links in signatures with cross-posting. By that definition, posting a link to a search result would also be cross-posting. SoftWareRevue 02-17-2005, 06:03 PM Sure it would, if that search result had been posted before and you linked to it. StarGate 02-17-2005, 06:43 PM I think people should be allowed to have thread links in their sig if it does NOT point to any thread associated with advertisable business! blue27 02-17-2005, 08:33 PM What is there to gain? The rule is there for a good reason and there is no reason to modify it and create more work for the mods. You have all lived this long without having links to threads in your signatures, I'm sure you can do without. SoftWareRevue 02-17-2005, 08:43 PM Right. That has been a WebHostingTalk rule for as long as I can remember. Not sure why it becomes a concern now. The only thing I can think of is that we relaxed the signature rules. Maybe we should just go back to no color and no live links. It was experimental, after all. ub3r 02-17-2005, 09:06 PM Right. That has been a WebHostingTalk rule for as long as I can remember. Not sure why it becomes a concern now. It's become a rule because i was warned for no good reason. SoftWareRevue 02-17-2005, 09:11 PM But the rule has been there as long as you've been a member. You apparently were warned for good reason because you chose to disregard the guidelines you agreed to. It's not like this was slipped in and you were unaware. ub3r 02-17-2005, 09:57 PM The rules are there to protect members, there is no harm in linking to a non-commercial thread. anon-e-mouse 02-17-2005, 10:03 PM Why should we allow it for some and not others. If it is across the board, we won't have to take time out to check it. We have more to do with our time :) gina_ 02-17-2005, 10:27 PM Geeze mickeylove/ub3r.. you linked to another thread.... Signatures May not contain links to other threads or posts. You got caught and you got points. Read the rules (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/rules.php), see for youself. You were reported. What was i supposed to do? Get over it, grow up and move on. Sorry to be harsh, but geezman... just follow the rules, ok? -tentative smile.. i'm sorry, but yanno, get over it. Its always been a rule here, just dont link to other threads. Thats all. Aussie Bob 02-18-2005, 02:13 AM Hey mikey, Just build a site called www.Im-not-ub3r-anymore.com and link to that in your sig, and from that site, forward it back to the WHT thread you originally had in your sig. :dgrin: |
