I can't figure out what setting to change. If I want to ping a site, I go to, let's say:

Start>Run>ping yahoo.com and I hit enter.

The dos window comes up, and it starts to ping the site. But the second it's done, the window disappears! Is there a setting I have to change so that it stays open??

Thanks for your help.

Start by downloading Slackware, Mandrake or Redhat and getting rid of Windows :D Just kidding, try start->run->command, then ping it from the prompt.

Open a DOS window and type ping yahoo.com.
DO NOT do it with the "Run" command.

Well, I seem to be able to do it by either:

Start>Run>Command and typing ping yahoo.com, which is the way you're saying NOT to do it

or

Start>Programs>MS DOS Prompt and typing yahoo.com, which I think is the way you're saying to do it.

Question: Isn't it the same thing? It's just getting me to the DOS window either way, isn't it?

I'm reading through a couple of online tutorials 'cause I want to learn more about pinging, tracert, etc., and they all say to use Start>Run>Command.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: Never mind, I just re-read your post. My brain's not working today. Thanks for your help.

When I ping my site, time=53 ms TTL=241 ,
and when I do tracert, avg time is 42 ms with 16 hops.

Is that good? Avereage? And what is that a reflection of - the server that my site is on, or the speed of my cable connection? Or both?

I love learning stuff like this...
Thanks for helping me learn.:D

Thats hard to say. It all depends on many things such as distance and what backbone you are going through. The best bet is not to ping just from your own computer, but other places as well from all over the place.

Thanks, davidb.
Can you tell me what a good ping response is more an indicator of...server performance or my Internet connection?

If I remember correctly, you can click on the start/run the type cmd in the box and click enter. Then you can run the traces and the pings and the screen won't disappear.

Also, try pinging at different times of the day, to give you a good average

if you use Win2000 you can add following entries to the system registry:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\DOSBox]
@="&DOS-Boxl"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\DOSBox\command]
@="cmd.exe"

When you then RIGHT-Click the start button or within explorer any system item you'll have the option "DOS-Box." That will open a Dos-Box window where you then can enter commands.

Thanks for the info, guys. I can get my DOS window OK now. Although I'd still like to know:
Can you tell me what a good ping response is more an indicator of...server performance or my Internet connection?

BTW, do you get a prize around here for your 100th post ???
