View Full Version : Help me decide on a host...

Hi!

Basically I want to spend about $15/month on a host ($20/ month = max), I am not sure if a long contract would be good, as some hosts may be good now but get worse in months to come (like aletia apparently did).

Here's hosts I am interested in so far: I am interested in all possible information about them, and yes I did search the threads here so I already know a little bit about them, but I am specifically looking for info an speed and reliability. I will mention what kind of impression I got about speed/reliabilty so far, but if you disagree just LMK. First hand experiences are always appreciated. :)

Myacen (http://www.myacen.com/)
Apparently good speed and reliability, currently my first choice.

GearHost (http://www.gearhost.com/)
Apparently acceptable reliabilty and bad speed, would be my first choice if the speed would be better.

Tera-Byte.com (http://www.tera-byte.com)
Apparently acceptable reliabilty and acceptable speed.

Aletia (http://www.aletia.com)
Apparently acceptable-bad reliabilty and acceptable-good speed?

HostRocket (http://www.hostrocket.com/)
Apparently acceptable-good speed and reliabilty? More expensive per GB then the rest...

Myqth (http://www.myqth.com/)
Speed and reliabilty = ??? but dirt cheap...

TIA!

Out of this list, I'd try MyAcen or Terra-byte.

So far 2 votes for Myacen (my own favorite), 1 for Aletia and 1 for Tera-Byte. :)

Does noone here have any experiences with Myqth?

And 311, if you have got any personal bad experiences with one of the hosts I mentioned please post them. I don't believe that just because something is cheap it's necessarily bad...

I find it interesting that you are "mad" that people might post negative messages. Maybe you thought that the purpose of WHT is to be a sounding board for hosts to advertise their services and "spin" their problems. If you choose to portray that attitude on a public forum like this one, I can only imagine how you act toward your customers in private.

The original poster of this thread asked for people to share their experiences. Those of us who have had negative experiences with hosting companies often want to warn others to avoid those hosting companies. I see nothing wrong with that, and in fact, when I'm looking for products and services, I often learn much more about them from any negative comments I find than from hundreds of "xyz RULES!!!!!" messages. Of course, all hosting companies, like all businesses, have, or have had, some problems. Many of us want to know if those problems are over, and if so, how they were solved. Thus, the "give and take" between the negative and positive comments about each hosting company.

By the way, I had a very negative recent experience with Aletia. If anyone wants to read about it, I posted a few messages about it a week or so ago. I wouldn't go back to Aletia, and I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. If the fact that I posted those messages makes someone from Aletia "mad," then that's their problem, not mine.

It is a general comment, but I think a couple of members are just asking (regarding the statement above), "Do you have any experience with any of these hosts in particular?" -which I think is a fair question to ask.

Ditto on what Chicken says and I encourage you to go to http://freewebspace.com and ask about Myacen. They have been around for almost a year and won't ya!

Check out www.cyrixweb.com. It seems to be pretty good site with a wide range of plans.

Maybe 311 is just applying common sense when recommending a host. Seems like good personal, advice to me.

Their web site is very well designed. One of the best that I have seen, well as far as web hosts go anyway.

Just out of curiosity, have you hosted with them? For how long?

The reason I ask is that they advertise they have been in business since 1997 on their web site. Yet, the name they say they have been done buisness as was just registered in Dec of 2001.

"When CyrixWeb® first went into business back in 1997, "

Just curiuos, but what name were they before?

Hi,

Sorry, I have not hosted my site on cyrixweb.com. I was going thru several host providers to find the right one. In the process, I found this to be a bit exciting. Therefore, I posted the info just to make others aware. But, it looks the website itself loads bit slow.. may be on my machine.... I am afraid if the websites hosted on this loads fast enough.

U may check another one... www.hostdepartment.com.

Cheers,
Arun.

So. let's recap:

MyAcen seems the winner so far. :)

Other recommanded hosts and stuff are interesting, but without any personal experience with a host I am reluctant to go witth them... and MyAcen seems very good so far, getting lot's of recommandations even if their price may be cheap...

Anyone here have any experiences with Myqth? Or HostRocket? Is the speed on GearHost still bad, or has that changed recently?

Not a problem for me, but you may consider,
The page for their NOC shows the same thing you would find for an Alabanza host, in fact it is pretty word for word from their site. Yet, they do not host in Alabanza's noc and use cpanel.

Speed on GearHost is great at the moment. For me at least: www.lordotrings.com

Sometime ago they had some cross connect issues (?) but once that was resolved speed was great and in my opinion still is.

wow, I never knew my post from above would be come such a controversy...

The reason why I said that is because Yes, I have been with 3 out of the six hosts mentioned by "MisterM." (Tera-byte, Aletia, and HR) The thing with them was that they started off being great, but as time passed, support started to lack, downtime was more frequent, and more...

I'm not saying that all cheap hosts are crap, some may stick to their word, but the ones I've tried, did for a while then they seemed to neglect me. This gave me the impression that the saying, "you get what you pay for" is very true.

Sorry for not making myself clear enough. I was just giving my opinion. I'm Sorry If I had offended anyone in my previous post.

311:

Although I cannot speak for the other posters that replied to your reply, I at least was not offended by your initial comment, and the fact that you wre unhappy with 3 out of the 6 hosts I mentioned is definitely interesting. :)
You are also the first to commetn on HostRocket, thanks.

pgkooijman:

Damn, you site is fast! Argh, now I feel like giving Gearhost a try... their 30 days money back gives them the largest advantage over Myacen...

all I have to say to you is, good luck in your quest in searching for a new host. When in doubt always try the search button on the top of this page. It has tons of information on almost all the hosts you've mentioned.

Compared to the other hosters I have used (Brinkster, NTIdesign and HorizonHosting) this is by far the fastest I have hads so far. The site is pretty graphical intensive and has a lot of concurrent users. Hope it stays like this forever.

Through everything that has been said on this forum about GearHost I can only say that my experiences have always been good. Apparently people have had their issues with them but this has never affected me or my sites so I am happy.....
Of course you need to do a lot of research on this forum and try them out first before you start switching sites.

Damn, now you have got back the advantage, myacen! :)

Oh well, I might as well go for myacen or gearhost right now and compare them myself... (hey, I finally get to put my miserable programming skills to a use... random number generator -> 1,3,5... = myacen first, 2,4,6... = gearhost first :D), if one really sucks I can just get my money back, and I can see if I really need those 30 GB gearhost offers (I doubt it).

Thanks for the quick reply, myacen! I would immediatly go with you if Gearhost wouldn't have 10GB more bandwith for a very similar price... a last quick question to you: Do you allow the hosting of multiple domains with one shared account?
