View Full Version : OT - Have webhosting prices dropped over time????????
Hi all.
I just wondered if webhosting prices have dropped over time?
Some of the golden oldies can help with this question. I just wondered how much webhosting prices were when the internet first hit off around a decade ago.
I am quite new to the internet (installed it in October 2000). I know prices for different services of hosting differ anyway but I mean what was the average price for the following a decade ago:-
1gig of space
10gigs of bandwidth
Or have the prices increased over time?
A bit off topic but something that has got me thinking today.
Cheers - DAV.:D :D :D
puggy106 02-24-2002, 08:59 PM Hosting is definetly becomming cheaper, more people in the business and servers becomming cheaper! Its just finding the best companys that are going to stay, and offer you the service you require.
I remember when I started doing web hosting in `96 .. a reseller package at ICOM.COM was $50 / month with $10 / mo extra for each domain.
I charged my customers $20.00 / month and they thought they were getting a great bargain :).

Well first off, I don't think you could have gotten the above back 10 years ago. It would have had to be on a mini or mainframe, and probably a flavor of Unix. My memory fails me, being so old, but I do not think you could even get 1gig of disk easily. I don't remember when the 2gig SCSI's came out, but I don't think it was after '92. Not only that, the internet was not really much compared to what it is now. It was mostly text based and in goverment and educational facilities. Most people were using Compuserve or AOL, but they didn't have internet access for some time.
I can't remember the specifics, but one of my first clients back around '94 got hosting with a company (webcom I think). I do not remember the specifics, but it was like 5mb of space and 500mb of transfer for $39.99 a month. I remember that they had a couple of higher plans than that also.
Maybe someone else can remember specifics of the time, I wasn't buying hardware back then, I was killing myself in a DBA job.
parawing742 02-25-2002, 09:29 AM In 1997, I was paying 12.95/month with CommuniTech.Net for 350MB of space and *Unlimited* Bandwidth. I'm still at that same rate because of there "price freeze"!
ToastyX 02-25-2002, 09:50 AM I'd imagine web hosting prices have dropped over time. Hard drives are getting larger and cheaper, and with the introduction of Cogent, bandwidth has become cheaper too. Hardware has become more powerful and cheaper. I think the problem is, it's becoming so affordable that nearly anybody can offer web hosting services now, so quality has dropped too.
avara 02-25-2002, 03:09 PM The cost of web hosting has definitely dropped over time. Back in the "old days", you couldn't really get a web hosting account for under $20 a month plus $50 setup, and that was with almost no disk space and features (apart from Perl support).
This wasn't really because hosts were ripping everybody off, but rather because everything computer and internet related was more expensive -- servers, computers, bandwidth, and even providing support was more expensive, due to fewer people knowing anything about server administration. You name it and it cost more!
For the moment, I think prices have hit rock bottom, with a lot of hosts going out of business even. But as computers and technology moves forward, I'm sure that you'll be getting ever more disk space, bandwidth and features for every buck you spend.

Sorry, I had to laugh at this. You installed the Internet.
How did it go? :)

From my experience in the web/ISP market in Orange County in the last 8+ years or so -- around 1994-95 web hosting came with your ISP access.
Typical prices were around $24.95/mo and included between 10-25MB disk space. Most advertised "unlimited bandwidth", though in reality many hosted dial-ups off T-1 lines in their office.
$24.95 isn't an uncommon "happy medium" in hosting today, though it's pretty obvious the service offering for that price has _drastically_ improved.

I understand that Interland is acquiring Communitech. Let us know if they eventually change the rules on you.
