Hi I been looking at a way to make some extra cash from home. I have about 8 yrs in the technical background and I worked for a small ISP/Webhosting company for a few years.
My question is:
Is there still profit to be made in the reseller business? I'm sure that's a stupid question but it just seems like the market is saturated these days with free hosting and cheap prices. I see some hosting packages for about the same price as I would pay per month for only 2Gb of reseller space. I'm looking to start off small and work up.
Also, is it worth it to offer free webhosting as a reseller?
Thanks for any advice.

If you offer something different, there is huge market.
If you offer the same thing the other 10,000 hosting companies offer, you won't go anywhere in terms of growth.
Be creative and innovative, plan things carefully and come up with new ideas. That would be my advice.

If you do not try to be the cheapest and give the most- and I would suggest focus locally... Less price driven sales in your home town.

Unless if your planning to offer all your hosting services for under $5.00, then absoultely, there is plenty of room for profit! Today, you simply cannot compete on price alone. You have to compete on the level and quality of the service that you provide.

Well, it depends on how much and what type of free web hosting that you're willing to provide. Are your providing completely free hosting accounts for life? Or are you offering free trials of your hosting service?
I would say that you can be effective by offering some free web hosting services. Whatever free hosting services you provide, just be careful not to overextend yourself with it.

What are some good ways to advertise locally that any of you have tried?

What kind of technical expertise are you refering to ? I suppose if you can provide a better deal with your hosting services, there will always be customers who will look up to you.
Learn to fulfil a business need, and surely they will come.
