Has Google made any statements about their recently acquired status of domain name registrar? I look forward to some crazy new services from Google :)

Where did you see information that they have become a domain name registrar? I couldn't see it on any of their pages as being something they offer.

Google play lots with domain name in their search results, they can identify expired domains and change SERP according to that. So they can play lots and lots in future.....

Did they already start providing domain registration services or just they go the accreditation?

I think you all my be overlooking the fact they have a sizable portfolio they may want to manage as well. Whether they will offer retail registrations? who knows. I believe AOL has a cred. too, don't see their domain registrar. i.net is elequa's personal registrar for his portfolio. A cred. doesn't always translate into a public registrar, but for search results and expired domains.... it wouldn't be surprising if google PR dropped more efficiently on expired domains as a reslut of unrestricted access to the registry.

Could they use the registrar status to monitor new domain name registrations and index anything that pops up?

That would be nice if Google broke out with something like $2.00 domains and blow the competition away. Just like they did with Webmail.

Because of their wholsesale costs, I dont see them losing money on each domain reg. in order to imbalance the market for a specific time.

Google is a public company. I do not think the thought of losing 4.25 + per domain name with no clear upsell channel as appealing to investors.
