View Full Version : When should you move a vbulletin board from a shared to dedicated server?

I have a client running a fairly large vbulletin message board, and they are consuming a fair amount of bandwidth. They pretty consistently have 30-40 users online at once, it looks like their database is about 180mb in size, and transfer is about 1gb a day on average (downstream).

I guess my question is, when should someone look to move a large vbulletin board to their own server? Is the above too high for a shared account?

Thanks.

It depends on many factors including the server, other accounts on the server, etc. We have some very upscale servers which we utilize for Bulletin Board Hosting. On accounts such as the one you described, we would put up to 6 accounts maximum on such server. Realize however that this server would have a minimum of Dual 1Ghz Processors, 2 GB Ram, and plenty of unthrottled bandwidth available.

I don't think that bandwidth has much to do on whether they need a dedicated server. Maybe server resources.

I'd say if they use more than 10% of the resources for more than a minute, then move them to that server that you have that has 9 other customers that are resource hogs. :)
