I assume that's $39 a month for each server, not both? :)

If it's for both I'll sign up now .. ;)

Thanks.

You think 39.99 is little high for cpanel? When others offer for $25-$30

I need to post a clarification - I got part of this confuscated:

CPanel is $49/month per server.
Direct Admin is free.

I posted this pretty late/early and used some weird pricing. Control Panel pricing is the same as the website. We charged $29/month for CPanel in last promotion which doesn't apply to this one. Sorry about that!

Because of the nature of this sale, I will work with those interested on a on-on-one basis to help on CPanel costs if that's a deciding factor.

It's one of the reaosns why I dislike CPanel so much. Bloated software and bloated entry-level licensing costs.

I just couldn't resist this deal, went ahead and ordered on a couple of minutes ago. Will post how everything went after it's all said and done but I'm already super-excited.

There is no set limit per se, but extra IP's are usually sold in blocks of 10/$7.50. The justification used should be ARIN-justifications.

Hope this answers your questions!

I was curious as to how many were included for each server already :) Is it only one IP per server than you must purchase any additional IPs?

Regardless this is one heck of a deal.

Hello, can you offer a discount on the $89 Celeron server? Also do you have a link to the TOS/AUP? Thanks.

If you want to upgrade the sale to include a beefier server, adding 512mb DDRAM is $10/month per server. So your monthly recurring would be $138/month.

Act quickly however- I don't have an endless supply of RAM and servers are going pretty fast as well. If we run out of extra memory, you'll have to utilize the $199 one time fee scenario for a 512mb DDRAM upgrade (or wait until we order/receive more memory).

Crud- the AUP/TOS/SLA link is down. I'll get that fixed...

Just so everyone knows, they could be a little better a communicating with their customers. I placed an order for a server yesterday 2/9, but it took *several* hours to get a confirmation e-mail, and when I did get one I was asked to send payment to a paypal address.

I then sent a request for clarification stating that I already gave CC info, and several hours later got a reply stating that I was in fact correct, and that I would have the info on my new server soon. That was 23 hours ago, and still no word.

Perhaps I'm being impatient, but I am used to a little faster response times. I hope they're just swamped due to popularity.

Agreed, the communication is usually a lot better. Just an FYI, we're not really used to 21 signups within any 24 hour period.

That was a surprise. So, please accept my apologies for the delayed responses during signup- we're trying to keep track of everyone at a pace we're just not entirely used to.

It'll certainly improve as the installs complete however. :)

This is a WHT sale/special - not a general promotion, so that would be why it isn't listed on the website. That makes it special for WHT folks and not the passer-bys.

Good catch however. :)

I must say that as far as contact is concerned I was very happy. Within 10 minutes or so I was alerted to a bo-bo on my part with the signup form. Another 10 minutes or so later I had a reply back from them after I fixed it saying that the servers were on the list to be imaged and set-up, can't wait to stick a copy of CS:CZ on there and see how they do.

You are allowed 5 IP's (installed on request), more IP's are available at 75c each.

These servers are NOT managed (by us anyway). :)

All servers are on their own VLAN which is essentially a divided class C.

You can, however, bind other IP's we have available on other subnets which would allow you to accomplish the same task.

So I guess the answer to your question is yes, but maybe not in the way you originally expected. :)

Wow, I would say you had a great response to your offer! Anyhow, just wanted to say that I have received my servers info and I'm looking forward to getting started with configuring it, and very late at night, or rather early in the morning. ;)

I look forward to being a long time customer!

Watch out for these guys. Their ability to communicate is just awful, and they have yet to follow up on any committment. I was e-mailed the info for a SSH login early this morning, but couldn't do much with it. It appears that apache is installed properly, but the port appears to be blocked at their firewall. I was told that the control panel would be installed by this morning, it's now 10:30pm, and I haven't even received a single status update, explanation, nothing! The worst thing is that an hour before I ordered on Wednesday I asked what the setup time would be, and was told 12-24 hours. It's now been 2 1/2 days.

The only thing they did in a timely manner is charge my credit card! And that was 2 1/2 days ago.

I can understand that they are swamped with orders, but it only takes a minute to keep your paying customers informed.

aplawson
02-12-2005, 05:52 PM
I'll speak to that personally:
I admit communication is spotty, but we thank you for your continued patience. When we received 20 orders as part of this promotion -- all within a 24 hour period -- we thought "no problem- activation should be a no brainer" until we realized/remembered that this sale was for 2 servers per order - that involved adding another rack to accommodate 48 new servers within 24 hours.

We do much better when not hammered with so much all at once. Your thoughts and candid opinion is not only appreciated by us but certainly all those reading as well. But we're confident you'll be pleased as things smooth out in the coming days.

Thanks- we'll continue plodding ahead. :)

I appreciate your explanations for the delays, however you continue to acknowledge that you have been communicating poorly with your customers, yet it continues.

As much as I appreciate the logistic report, you have twice promised when my server would be setup and ready, twice you've stated that you were going to install the control panel "in the morning" and twice I've received nothing. Heck, I even offered to install the control panel myself if you put the files on the server, yet I received no reply.

I'm paying for a server that's sitting in a rack, totally useless to me, while I continue to receive vague explanations and missed promises. As I stated previously, minutes before I placed the order you said that setup would take 12-24 hours, possibly up to 48 hours, that was during this supposed "rush" so you shouldn't have had a reasonable idea of the time needed.

So, since you still have not answered my e-mail that I sent 6 hours ago, I ask you publically.. When will the server that I started paying for over 3 days ago be ready for me to use?

I will make a short post here as to my setup experience and a much longer one in the dedicated server section later.

I ordered my server thursday night. About 10 or so minutes after I had ordred the machine I recieved an E-mail telling me about a mistake in my part filling out the signup form. I fixed it and everything was under-way in another 10 minutes or so. 24 hours later I recieved the login information for my servers as well as an e-mail inbetween to let me know that they were working on everything. Directadmin was not up due to license issues but I was assured it would be up the next day (sunday). Sunday night I recieved an e-mail asking for my root login passwords (i changed them) so directadmin could be installed. I sent the e-mail back and in under an hour directadmin was completely set up.

All in all it took about 50 or so hours with a heck of a lot of work for CalHost and on a weekend at that for my two machines to be set up. Throughout the whole thing my support rep. Del was just great. Not only was he incredibly professional about everything, he was also very friendly and prompt. All my e-mails were responded to in a very quick manner and I couldn't be happier with the service I have from CalHost. I also get better pings for Counter-Strike Condition Zero from Calhost (based in california) than I did from my IL host (I am in Michigan). That says something to me as well.

Full post later in the Dedicated Server Forum.

I bought a server with them, so far, not too bad,.. communication is not as fast as I used to which I believe is because of the 2 promotions going on from Calhost (1 after another 1).

As I gotta a Pen2.8 that is so low in pricing, the ping rate and transfer speed is so good (or at least that what I experience now), I don't expect the same service that I received from another DC.

DirectAdmin is slow to setup, but like, I mentioned to Adam and Del, I don't mind it being setup later as I can install the software I want and use my time to backup my work on another server to migrate to there.

Nevertheless, working out in the area of communication will be a plus sign for Calhost so that you can keep those patience customer still patience and understanding..

Area to improve:

1. If you commit to do thing by whatever time, and can't deliver, notify the customer. We will understand.

2. Perhaps, you want to hire some temp staff considering your promotion is so attractive. (I wasn't really to get another server yet, but I can't just sit there and wondering why I miss out this offer in 1 -2 month times)

By the way, keep up the good work which is slowly (sometime, to some of us) but helpful and surely.

PS: If you have server at a great promotion in another location not in the west coast of America, let me know too, I'm be interested.

Hi Patrick/ everyone,

The downside to offering this kind of promotion was the sheer volume of new signups (and new each signup meant 2 new server installs). We almost tripled our inventory population in one week alone. The hard part about growth is that sometimes it is gradual (which we're accustomed to) and sometimes it comes like a hurricane (which we are NOT used to). We'll do better next time.

UltraUNIX, Del will be in touch with you. The best way to reach support is to email them at support@calhost.com.

Thanks again to all who chose us and were as patient as they were throughout the process -- we're definitely looking forward to our next promotion (one server at a time!) :)

Adam - Congrats on the growth! I am positioning myself for similar growth soon.

Your customer service skills are to be commended. They will take further that good hardware and a solid network any day.

Well, it took almost an entire week before I had a useable server delivered to me, but at least the server appears to be first class, and rock solid.

The downside is that their support is some of the worst I've encountered. They claim to offer 5 IP's, so I asked about getting two more allocated and routed so I could set up a nameserver on the box as that is the only thing keeping me at my current host, and never received a reply.

That was a week ago. Their machines are great, but their communication skills are horrible.

Overall I would give them a grade of a B+. As I stated in my previous post, their communication skills aren't the best, but they have improved recently, and it does look like I'll get my other IP's routed by the weekend.

Don't let me experience scare you off, but if you choose them make you're your patient, and expect your order to take a few days to fill. In the end I'm definately glad I signed up for the offer.

I ordered my server February 15, 2005. It has been almost a month. No word. It's getting extremely frustrating.
