I am aiming to get into the hosting biz in a few months but i have some questions. do i really need a dedicated server to sell hosting or is there any other way. what are the other ways to sell hosting. i know i can resell but is it as simple as getting a hosting plan and simply reselling, dont i need some expertise.

i know something about ecommerce, and i have a friend who know this stuff too.

Not every host is a server admin.

If you know about running a successful business; you know that the most important element is not what 'you' know; but it's what your 'company' knows.

If you surround yourself with enough knowledge to do all the things needed to be able to maintain a professional organization, then you have done your job well.

You may want to consider starting off slowly, getting yourself a reseller plan and perhaps hosting some close friends.

They will understand if you can't do certain things, and that you may take a while to answer their questions.

Depending on who you go to, you don't need much in the way of expertise.

Hi Techar, I am also a newbie and I am starting my Design/Hosting business with a few people that are in my area and need a website. I am basically honest and I tell them that I can't offer the whole array of design hosting services right now , but most of them just basically need an informational website and some pop email accounts.
I signed up for a reseller account and I can basically add or remove Domains anytime that I want to. It's great. I would recommend getting a small reseller account
We plan to expand by just word of mouth now in our area and after all, it's just a side business for me now and I'll see where it leads to in the future.

The best way to start is reselling... Most of the web hosts i know started reselling due to the fact they did not have the money to buy dedicated servers and/or co lo there own...

Go with a good company that offers good support for you this inturn will help you give good support to your customers!

At the start Think small Act small... Dont throw your self into a high monthly fee contract paying for space and bandwidth you dont need. Aim to find a respectable and trustworthy company that you can trust and operate with like a partner in a reselling situation...

Dont think to big to begin with as i have seen in this forum many times over" The hardest thing to do is get your first 10 customers" And this is no word of a lie!

If you have any more questions about starting up PM me.

Good luck

If hosting is really shakey ground for you, you should start with a reseller plan, but one where you reseller specific plans, rather than buying large amounts of disk space/data transfer and just splitting it up among your clients.
