You would need to renew the domain name at godaddy if you wish to transfer.

newk, as dmaven said, you have to renew it with the current
registrar first before transferring out. The new ICANN transfer
policies have finally included this as another condition to deny.

you can NOT transfer a domain unless it stands in your name. If your domain does NOT expire until tomorrow, you can transfer your domain. Note, transferring a domain can take several days, so you may run out of time before the transfer goes through.

The only time you can NOT transfer a domain is if the domain has expired or the domain was just registered, which leaves you with a 60 day no-transfer policy. I guess that number varies from registrar to registrar, but godaddy operates with 60 days if I'm not mistaken.

Nope. Again, expired domains for the most part CAN'T be moved
out from one registrar to another. You'd have to either renew with
the current one, or wait up to possibly 2-3 months for it to be
available for re-registration.

The drawback with waiting for it to become available is there's a
possibility someone else might be able to register it. Do consider
your options here carefully.

I have a similar situation to newk...

My domain expired on Jan. 7 and I was looking to renew. The Registrar at WHOIS is Bulk Register. I contacted them to renew and I was told to get in contact with my reseller and they provided me with the following info.

Here is the contact information for you reseller:
Domain Admin
Company Geek Hosting
Address P.O. Box 433002
San Ysidro, CA, 92173
Country United States
Tel (413) 638-9572
Fax (413) 638-9572
Email ghdomains@geekhosting.com

If you need further assistance please respond to this email or contact me at 1-877-841-6827.

I've tried emailing...calling...the whole nine yards...is there anything I can do to get around this and Still renew? or if anyone knows the right steps to handling this? Thanks in advance....

Concerned :bawling: ,
James

James/jfmusic, your situation isn't unique. But yes, in cases where
the domain name was registered via a reseller of a registrar, you
have to deal with the reseller first.

If after 2 days nothing's resolved, contact Bulkregister and ask if
they can somehow "freeze" the domain name temporarily and if
they have a mechanism to transfer it to a direct account with BR.
Although it means renewing with BR using their prices (if possible)
and interface, at least you should have an option of still retaining
the name without facing the danger of losing it.

The catch here, though, is if Bulkregister has the facilities to allow
them to "hold" the name and switch it from their reseller to their
direct account. Find out.

When a domain name expires it enters a so called redemption grace period that should last 30 days (not guaranteed yet). During this period the domain is removed from the zone files, so it won't work anymore, but it is not deleted. During this period it cannot be transferred, it can only be renewed at its current registrar. Note that besides the renewal fee you also have to pay a redemption fee, usually between $50 and $200. I believe GoDaddy's redemption fee is $80.
