Thanks :) XDude 02-24-2002, 01:56 AM Because shared hosting is all I do :). ChrisW 02-24-2002, 03:08 AM Shouldn't this be in 'Running a Hosting Biz'? checkall 02-24-2002, 04:30 AM 1) The cost to run shared hosting is relatively low. It's easier to get started. 2) There are much more shared hosting buyers out there than dedicated server or colocation buyers, so it's easier to make sales. Many small sales can be added big. 3) That's what we do. We carry dedicated server and colo as well, but it's aimed at further lowing our shared hosting cost and getting better support from our datacenter. We do marketing for our datacenter in that area. Equilibrium 02-24-2002, 04:11 PM "checkall" 100% True Unless someone else disagrees ? he he :) checkall 02-24-2002, 04:57 PM In the same building of our datacenter there are facilities of a big hosting company with several hundred thousands of domains hosted. It's said that it's the largest one in web hosting industry. The company has shut down almost all dedicated server and colo facilities and laid off 500 employees, but only keep shared hosting business. (Our datacenter purchased lots cheap but high quality stuff from it.) In stock market, you need to follow big guys to make money. So is true in web hosting market. Equilibrium 02-24-2002, 05:03 PM checkall - What host are you talking about that is in your datacenter that shut down almost all dedicated server and colo facilities and laid off 500 employees? Thanks :) HRMelissa 02-24-2002, 05:33 PM Profit margins are much much higher on shared than dedicated and especially colo. A rack that can bring in $1000 a month doing colo can bring in $100,000 a month in shared hosting... -Brendan checkall 02-24-2002, 06:31 PM What host are you talking about that is in your datacenter that shut down almost all dedicated server and colo facilities and laid off 500 employees? Hostpro running their own datacenter in the building in Los Angeles was purchased by Interland in Atlanta, and Interland did it last year. It's not in our datacenter, but a different company in the same building that our datacenter is currently located. Interland still has facilities, though much smaller, in the building because all big telecom carriers have offices and facilities in the building. 2Grumpy 02-25-2002, 02:12 AM One thing that's surprised me is how lucrative domain registrations have been. I've done around 340 domain registrations and they're quite profitable @ $15.00 per registration! At first I was like "I won't do enough of these to matter" then I started doing 3-5 per day and got a (what I guess) is a pretty nice reseller rate and realized "hell I'm making $20-35 per day in profits just registering a few domains". I mean no killing but it's a nice boost, every dollar helps! I love resellers! I make more money or at least as much money, per server with resellers and I put W A Y less tech support time into that server than I do one full of shared hosting! wmac 02-25-2002, 02:44 AM As I do not have enough resources for marketting, I give the accounts to local companies and they resell for me. This is about %90 of my sales. I have about 30,000 banner expressions (1000 Clicks and about 5000 visits of my website) but do not have much sales from my website. Mac |
