Are there any Exodus Datacenters in the New England Area? Jason Ellis 02-23-2002, 08:59 PM Exodus is both a datacenter and a carrier. For a long time they only did datacenters - but when Global Crossing bought out Frontier GlobalCenter, the gov't required that the new company divest of GlobalCenter's Internet backbone, which Exodus ended up purchasing. So although their primary business is in datacenters, they also do own their own (previously GlobalCenter's) nationwide backbone. To answer your second question - yes, there is an Exodus datacenter (two of them in fact) in Waltham, Massachusetts. There may be others in New England, but that's the only one I know of. There's also an InterNAP datacenter (formerly CO Space) in (I *think*) Sommerville, Mass. I've been to both of them - Exodus is more impressive (raised flooring and everything), but InterNAP is just plain big with a ridiculous amount of space to expand. Allegience Telecom also owns a datacenter in the Boston area that was formerly HarvardNet - not nearly as large (only about 20,000 square feet) as InterNAP, nor quite as impressive as Exodus, but a decent facility nonetheless (just make sure your servers have umbrellas - they ran out of money to put in a dry chemical fire suppression system, so they've got a dry-pipe local-zone water sprinkler instead - at least that was the case in 2000 last time I was there, before the Allegience buy-out. That may have changed, I don't know.). There was also a company in Worcester, MA building a datacenter called the "Bandwidth Center". I do not know if they ever finished the build-out, though, as they were doing it kind of at the very tail end of the datacenter building boom and they might have run out of funding. There are also a couple datacenters up in the Nashua, NH area, but I haven't visited any of them so I can't comment on them. Jason Synergy 02-23-2002, 09:13 PM Do Jason do you have the addresses of the Exodus DCs in Waltham? Also I've heard that they are (not exodus) planning to build a telecom city near my house (5 minutes from me). :) Jay Suds 02-24-2002, 01:18 AM Just FYI - Exodus is now "Exodus, a Cable & Wireless Service" .. http://www.exodus.net/about_exodus/press_room/press_releases/20020201_01.html I've also heard some interesting stories about people basically just walking into Exodus data centers and leaving with equipment they didn't own :o Synergy 02-24-2002, 02:14 AM Originally posted by Jay Suds Just FYI - Exodus is now "Exodus, a Cable & Wireless Service" .. http://www.exodus.net/about_exodus/press_room/press_releases/20020201_01.html I've also heard some interesting stories about people basically just walking into Exodus data centers and leaving with equipment they didn't own :o You gotta be kidding me right? Jay Suds 02-24-2002, 02:19 AM Unfortunately, not joking at all. I gather since that incident (which was quite a while ago - probably at least a year now ...) Exodus has beefed up security protocols a bit. I suppose I should clarify a bit - the people didn't just walk right in and walk right out. It was more of a social engineering thing. They were able to bs themsevles thru security ... Synergy 02-24-2002, 02:46 AM Well thats not good.... I hope that dont happen now.... One day i'll walk in and see my server is missing  Jason Ellis 02-24-2002, 01:22 PM Originally posted by Synergy Do Jason do you have the addresses of the Exodus DCs in Waltham? I'm afraid not. It was very difficult to come by back when I visited their facility - in fact, just getting the tour seemed harder than convincing the CIA to show you their gadgets arsenal! We had to schedule it weeks in advance through their corporate headquarters. Also I've heard that they are (not exodus) planning to build a telecom city near my house (5 minutes from me). :) Is that the Medford/Everett telecom city, or the Greenfield telecom city, or one of the dozen other "telecom city" plans that popped up back in the heart of the .com boom? So far as I know, none of them have even come close to being completed, and at this stage it looks like none of them will unless the .com economy takes off again (but it probably won't). I know that HarvardNet was deeply involved with the Medford telecom city project, but since they were acquired by Allegience Telecom, I don't think they've done anything. I could be wrong. Jason Synergy 02-24-2002, 04:08 PM Well its the Medford Telecom City and They have completed tearing down the warehouses and dug a huge hole :) |
