View Full Version : Server Specs - Is it enough?

After much research I have decided to build my own server and co-locate.
These are the specs:
1U rackmount case - 200W PS
ASUS TUSL2-C Motherboard
Pentium III 1 GHZ Processor
512 Meg Ram
60GB 7200 Maxtor IDE Hard Drive
Intel 100 Ethernet Card
Linux Version 7.2
Plesk 200 Domain License

I want to be able to host 200 domains (max) per server.
No site would exceed 100MB space.
Do you think this server would do the job?
I would like comments or suggestions on this configuration.
Thanks!
John

If it was me, I would put in a gig of ram because I love memory and you can never have too much. Correct me if I am wrong does plesk even support rh 7.2? I though only 7.1, 6.2.

Other than that is looks good!!

Correct, plesk doesn't support RH7.2 at this time :(
v2.5 will be out in March, which will support RH7.2, or at least I hope it will :D

Uh, yes..Plesk does support RedHat 7.2 - I installed it several times and it has worked perfectly.

Once again,.. being able to run it and plesk supporting it are two different things. Yes it is possible to install PSA 2 on RH7.2, but no plesk will not support you if you break your server with it..

I'm not a plesk fan - but I am looking forward to seeing 2.5

Yeah, I've also been wondering if Plesk 2.0 would work well on Redhat 7.2 or not. If not, I better wait until Plesk 2.5 is out, should be in the next few weeks. I plan to use Plesk on my next dedicated server... can't wait to get it though...

More RAM...

Also, a means to backup...either separate disk...drive....or another server.

I agree with incogneto. Get yourself another drive, and another stick or 2 of ram. Also, if you plan on allowing your clients to use subdomains, you will need more that a 200 domain license, or make a dirty hack to allow "unlimited" subdomains.

If all your customers used 100% of the space you provided them then it would only be 20 GB in user files. I think you could have easily gone with two 20 gb or 30 gb hardrives as most will not use the full 100mb or even half.

The second could be used for backup.

The 60 GB Hard Drive is overkill. On the other hand, space is so cheap so I just didn't point it out.

It has been so long since I had any space issues as all servers reach capacity in some other area such as processor, RAM, transfer, or just plain usage long before they approach 30 GB of space. Guess when all pages were static html it was different.

512 MB is max RAM for the TUSL2-C since it is based on the Intel 815E chipset.

Do you have a special deal with Plesk? 200 domain licence was specially created for Rackshack, you can't purchase it from Plesk...

Besides, I would personally prefer a motherboard with a BX chipset, mainly because of the i815 RAM limitations. Those "old" BX'es still rock.

Good catch.

That being the case, I would write that one off. It would be good perhaps to provide one customer a dedicated server or very limited hosting, but would I set out to host 200 domains on that configuration with no possibility of upgrade....no way.

In answer to the 200 domain license. Plesk offers several different levels of licensing.

Standard Plesk packages are 30, 300 and unlimited domains license. I'm sure they'd sell a 200 domain license to anyone, not just Rackshack, but not for a single server... If anyone has different info from Plesk, please post it, I'm interested :)
