View Full Version : Why is webmin such a biatch

Ok, I'll admit I'm a newbie to dedicated hosting, and I'm playing around at the moment, but I must say I've come to the conclusion that webmin is a real pain to set up. The install went smoothly via SSH and it's working fine.

I got an ftp server running, but hey, nobody can log in to the ftp server :stickout I turned anonymous access off and the darn thing won't accept any username and password as being valid.

I know I shouldn't complain about a free product, and that I should be using a different CP as a newbie, but my server is running on redhat 7.2 and neither plesk nor ensim support 7.2 yet. I'd use HSphere, but their pricing is a total mistery to me (do you have to buy a minimum amount of licences, or do you buy 1 by one... Didn't get an answer to my questions from their support department). Cpanel would be nice, but I'm not paying $100 a month, as I'm not going to be running a webhosting business or anything. This server is for educational purposes and hosting some sites of my friends and me.

Looks like I'm going to be reading the complete webmin manual so I can figure out what the hell I'm doing
But that was partly the point of renting my server, if I'd been in for serious dedicated hosting, I certainly wouldn't have gone for a kingcomp server :D

Webmin rocks! and pretty as hell :)
Just play around with it. Oh BTW, you can install Plesk on 7.2. I have :)

Then again ...since you you are not happy with any of these, who the hack needs a control panel any way? :D

I love webmin - but its not for newbies - I agree.

First thing is to make sure you are running ProFTPD.

Also - your FTP problem could be this:
Make sure you create system users and not webmin users.

Well, I got a friend of mine involved, and together we managed to get apache working, so we are slowly making progress, but I think I'll still install plesk, because some other people will be hosting sites on the server, and I'd like to give them their own CP, rather than them having to bother me each time they want something set up, even though most of them are my friends :D

So, plesk runs on 7.2? Any problems with it so far? Did you install it under 7.2, or did you upgrade to 7.2 after you installed plesk? Just wondering as on the plesk forum a few people state plesk won't run under 7.2, which really supprised me, as 7.2 isn't much different from 7.1...

Hello

I strongly suggest you to install a copy on your local computer and work with it for a while.

This is what I did when I was going to use it.

By the way I have about 5 years of experience with linux and unix programming so I did not have any problem with it.

I love it now, I love it. and it does not ask you for a price!
