I get about four minutes of downtime daily with tera-byte's 4u plan. After talking to there support people, they said that this is normal for shared hosting. Is it?

4 mins of downtime a day for 31 days is: 124 mins

And there's 44640 mins in a 31 day month.

Do the math, cause I really don't like math myself... ;)

well from my calculations that equates to about 99.65% uptime...........is that not good enough for ya?????????

No, I think anything over a minute of downtime is unacceptable. That's just me. After all, I am just a fourteen year old newbie to the hosting world...perhaps I've come to expect too much out of a shared hosting account? Shìt, I had less downtime with my damn netfirms account, which was free.

I wouldn't say there is anything "normal" about experiencing downtime on a daily basis, unless it is scheduled. However, you must define downtime. Your innability to reach your website, does not always mean that there is a problem on your host's end.

While obviously with shared hosting you will get some downtime (nobody can guarantee 100% uptime with shared hosting), 4 minutes of downtime per day seems very strange. I mean there will be times when one shared user overloads the server with a badly written CGI script, or a router goes down. But that sort of thing does not happen very often, and certainly not every day!

If you're on a Windows server, it might be that they're restarting the server every 24 hours, or maybe they're running a backup script? No matter what the answer, this isn't normal.

Yes.
Like I said, you need to verify that it is in fact a problem on your host's end, and not somewhere inbetween you and your host. When you experience this problem, do a traceroute to your domain name, to see if it dies along the way. You can also have someone who is not on the same network as you, try to reach your site.

is your site under construction?

As a rule, messages generated by Microsoft Internet Explorer mean almost nothing.

yeah, often if you hit the enter button too fast IE shouts cannot find server or something to that effect, also if a page is still loading and you decide to enter a new url, IE gets confused.

-No my site is not under construction. All of the pages are up and I update it periodically
-I know I am experiencing downtime when my forum spontaneously dies, and all my visitor's bitch at me over AIM.

If this is happening that frequently, it would not be "normal" As others have stated though, you are getting a fair uptime percentage for the world of shared hosting, but I would be a bit concerned about the frequency of these problems.

Yeah...as soon as my damn 6-month plan with tera-byte.com expires, I am RUNNING towards myacen.com

But I also registered my domain names with them...

I am such a damn idiot...:bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

Okay then -- independent reports from users connected to different ISPs are good data concerning your outages. Questions:

Have you determined if the outages are at the same time every day?

Does the host have terms in their agreement about daily scheduled outages (for backups or something?)

Have you considered an offiste monitoring service (such as qwkmon.net) ?

Have you asked the web host about the outages?

How much traffic (hits & bandwidth) is your site doing? How much are you paying?

I wouldn't necessarily leave a host over a little downtime, I would want to find the source though. As far as the domains go, you should own your domain, which means you can take it with you. Unless they are one of the lame hosts that put a clause in their contract for domains.

I am on 4u, which means...
200 mb space
20 gigs transfer
10 a month
If there is an outage for backs ups, they inform me.
The only thing there support team told me about the subject was that:
I share the server with some 200 other sites, and there is downtime because of all the combined stress we put on the damn server.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I wouldn't expect 99.99% uptime for a 20GB/month transfer for $10 plan.

How much bandwidth are you actually using?

If you registered the domain with Tera-Byte then you have no problems. Tera-Byte uses OpenSRS (http://www.opensrs.com/) and your user name and password that comes with your Tera-Byte account should also work there. You have full control over yous DNS settings. I too have been having problems with them. It first started out as miscommunication with their sales staff and now the saga continues. My FTP is constantly giving me time outs and corrupted files. Time to move on.

I can't speak for TGL4387DD but I have neither the time nor resources myself to invest. I pay for a service I expect to get what I am paying for, period.

if they never have downtime for over a minute then thats a BAD thing.... security upgrades, software updates, etc....

Well, I wouldn't be bitching about my downtime as much as I am if I didn't have friends who told me they had practically no downtime while we are on the same exact plan.
