I have searched through the forum but there are no posts about them. What can you say about westnic? Thanks in advance!

Hello. I signed up with westnic in June 2004.

Pros:

+ Responsive technical support. They provide emergency and local
phone numbers, helpdesk and email support.
Just call this number: 800-438-0260 ext 1

+ Good uptime (comparable to my previous hosts). My sites went down twice since then:
first time when Apache stopped responding (about 1-2 hours in August) and second time
due to network outages (about 4 hours in November).

+ They accept not through Paypal credit cards. I hate Paypal!!

+ Real name servers. I found out that they don't host dns on the same server which
is a good thing to know. Especially for resellers. Private name servers are
free of charge.

+ They offer Cpanel and Web Hosting Manager. Interesting fact is that even cheap
hosting plan (they had $3.95 plan before) came out with Web Hosting
Manager.

+ Fast servers. I am hosted on Dell with dual Xeon processors with SCSI disks.

+ Good network. They use The Planet and offer plenty of bandwidth which I use a LOT.

+ You can host separate accounts (NOT addons) like mydomain1.com, mydomain2.com
and so on under one account. There is no need for reseller account,
WHM included in all plans. However, I decided to upgrade because
they give free SSL and IP.

+ They offer dedicated SSL and IP (free of charge for resellers).

Cons:

- If you get 500 error in your script, man, you are in trouble. They
don't support scripts, but they do provide them through Fantastico!!

- They have VERY slow signup time. I referred my friend to them in
January. There was no answer from westnic for 2 days. Then they called
him and ran some freaking "credit card authorization". Then what? They didn't
charge him for about a week! I know that many companies offering
instant signup these days.

- No docs. I guess they prefer to answer 1000000 same questions via
helpdesk than create good online tutorials.

- They don't offer Windows hosting. I had to buy different account
elsewhere to provide windows based services to some clients.

Overall: 7 out of 10.

Good luck with new host!

I just signed up with WestNic. It took about 2 days to get the account set up, but once we got going everything seemed fine. They use cPanel, and have a ton of features: shopping carts, scripts, etc. Very feature rich.

*but* when I installed my first site I found out they don't have mod_rewrite enabled. Oops! I've got to have it to "clean" my long php/mysql urls. I'm waiting now on whether they can enable it for me or not.

I was hosting with Westnic.net for over a year, UNTIL TODAY. I have had problems with their support, they have an atitude that you are just really stupid.

I tried to create a new listing for a URL in the WHM and it said the listing already existed. I previous had a listing for the URL but had deleted it several days before.

I created a support ticket and when I got a repsonse, usually a few hours, it said I needed to wait a few minutes after deleting before trying to create the same one again and he closed the ticket.

So I had to create a NEW ticket and said something to the effect, "issue not closed." Then explained the situation. He sent me an email and THREATED TO CLOSE MY ACCOUNT!!!!

I was talking with sales at the time about upgrading, but decided against it and called the support guy a bastard to the sales guy and he also threatened to close my account.

I did manage to post my complaint on their forums but rather than trying to rectifiy the situation they just closed my account.

So I have spent MUCH TIME looking for a host the passed week with good prices, good support, and such. I moved to accuhost but they would not send me all the required info in the welcome emails and I had to repeatedly email them asking what my IP address is before DNS transfer, and such. I repleated asked two or three questions in an email and they would only answer one, and I would have to email them again.

I think at this point that I will go with eagerhost.com because they meet my qualifications which includes data center in Fort Worth. I would never have a site with a data center in New Jersey or New York, or some other place that might get hit by a terrorist attack or hurricane.

First of all, you have been with us for more than 1.5 years.

Personally, I don't think you would find a good host. I mean.. I know a lot of great web hosting companies and I really wish you
to find the best one. However, You will find yourself looking for another host shortly... then another one and so on. Look what you've wrote above. This is just a beginning. I think our company established an absolute record hosting YOUR BUSINESS.

About Russell, who sent you "an email and THREATED TO CLOSE MY ACCOUNT". This is not true, please have a look:

"Sorry, we can't process refund after 60-day period (after signup).
You've been with us for more than a year (since March 2004).

You can certainly close your account at any time, before next billing
date (03/25/2006)."

Did he say something about WestNIC? After 1.5 years of excellent
service you called our staff members ""bastards", "smart asses" etc. So, I presume, you don't like WestNIC anymore and.. you can certainly close your account before next billing date (subscription cancellation). You did this already.

Good luck.

Oh, sure you know it all westnic. I was talking with sales about upgrading, so why did I suddenly want to leave your company???

For nothing, no, because of your threatening employees!!!

I would never have a site with a data center in New Jersey or New York, or some other place that might get hit by a terrorist attack or hurricane.
There are many data centers in New York that have never been hit by any sort of natural disaster. In fact, most data centers are built to withstand quite a bit, for example ThePlanet is supposedly built to withstand a CAT5 hurricane. I really don't think you should generalize every single data center in New York and New Jersey.

I have a right to my opinion. I never said they were not well built, but they cannot withstand a suitcase nuke.

If I want to take the safest route, that's my business.

OK, as soon as you find data center that can withstand a suitcase nuke, let us know.

IF you are concerned about a data center.. Then maybe you need to put your money where your mouth is and pony up for some back-up solutions and start a cluster in other datacenters too.
