View Full Version : Good value windows reseller plz?
Canglan 02-02-2005, 10:56 PM Hi folks,
I have linux/bsd servers offering php+mysql hosting. However, a small amount of clients are interested in windows hosting which needs asp+access.
I have looked into AllManaged.com, their pre-sale/opening-sale is very attractive however, their windows packages only support asp+mysql, no access. :(
Could anyone recommend some good value windows reseller companies?
Please I want to hear comments from end-users or reseller users. Please don't PM me offers.
Thanks. :)
eSited 02-03-2005, 12:33 AM When you say access...
Do you mean remote assistance?
And I'm sure you can find many sites that does Windows Hosting by doing a search on "Windows Hosting".
crosswire 02-03-2005, 02:06 AM I think he means Access - as in Microsoft Access database software. Why anyone would want to use that I don't know.... It would have to be a not too popular site!
LinkOnUs.com 02-03-2005, 02:49 AM If they are using Windows boxes - MS Access is standard, they only need to setup ODBC connection. If you are using ASP I can even send you the code so you don't need any ODBC connection.
You might think of moving up to MS SQL server instead of MS Access. Access has several issues.
* Size of file grows with time
* You should take offline and compress/repair often under even moderate use.
* If file is use it cannot be backed up unless you have something like Open File Option using Veritas back up solution.
* Some providers offer Web Gui tool that allows you to manage it from web browser. I think we might have it enabled in our Demo plan.
Reseller-Center 02-03-2005, 09:04 AM Some hosts have disabled access because of the Jet driver bug, however in addtion the repair option you should look into upgrading to a sql platform, as access was never meant for hosting; at least MS recommends not using it for this.
BTW there is a built-in upgrade/migrate tool in Access to switch to sql.
Canglan 02-03-2005, 09:04 AM Hello geocash,
Thanks alot for your suggestion. However, my clients are mainly using 3rd party scripts which are ASP+Access. I know nothing about programming, so I have no idea how to let them migrate their scripts from ASP+Access to ASP+MySQL smoothly. :(
And yes I know Access is very limited function wise and performance wise. In fact this is the reason why I do not want to start any Windows server whilst we have many unix servers. :) However, an ASP+Access reseller package would benifit some of my clients, so I will look for it.
Any advice?
Thanks.
AllenB 02-03-2005, 09:34 AM Hello,
There are a lot of quality hosts here who should be able to meet your requirements. You might want to try the WHT Host Quote feature on this forum to get some offers.
Good luck w/ your search!
gbcactus 02-12-2005, 01:41 AM I have numerous sites using Access databases running on the servers at Reseller-Center. I haven't had a database problem since they've been there which is more than a year. Any other problem has been dealt with in a reasonable amount of time.
The sites range from 1000 to 10,000 unique visitors per month so most would be considered lightweight and Access works fine. You can thank Macromedia for my affection to Access. But I know I'll have to switch to MySQL or SQL Server if I want to take on Ebay.
I've done some research and think it would be hard to beat Reseller-Center's price and still get good hosting.

On windows 2000, there is no bug in the Jet driver. The Jet driver bug was there on Win2003 for which Microsoft released a hot-fix in September, 2004.
Howerver, the Microsoft Access ODBC driver is unreliable on both Win2000 and Win2003 and hence we recommend our MS Access customers to use the Jet/OLEDB driver instead.
Recently, we ran into an issue between SQL Server and Win2003 where customers were getting SQL Server time-outs occasionally. This issue is due to a flaw in TCP/IP on Win2003, which has been fixed in SP1 due out shortly

Ebay uses Oracle if I'm correct :)
My classification:
Oracle > SQL Server > PGSQL > MySQL > MS Access
I'd seriously not recommend using MS Access for sites over 10K monthly visitors, especially with large MS Access databases (> 20MB). It can put some strain on the CPU.
gbcactus 02-12-2005, 02:19 AM Thanks for expertise Yash. Just another reason I should switch from Access to another platform. I guess I'll make a trip to Barnes & Noble for a SQL Server book and an Espresso Macchiato.
