View Full Version : Reviews of Tyan 2505T Servers??

Anyone running this board with RH 7.2 and the onboard nic?
Have you run it with a full boat load of customers (200 to 300 customers) ?
Please...your review would be appreciated since i am looking at this or a supermicro board :)
Cephren 02-22-2002, 01:32 PM Hey guess what? I just bought this board also recently!
I dont think the Promise IDE raid supports RH7.2 for multi processor, only RH 7.1. It only supports RH 7.2 for uniprocessor.
Neverthless it is a good board for an entry level server. And I am quite sure it can handle at least 200 clients.
Onboard NIC = stable................(onboard stuff is always more stable than sticking pci cards in)
The only thing which bothers me is that it can only handle 1.5 GHZ of ram running PC133.
Unfortunately I am using it for hosting 5 sites, so W2K IIS.50 will do for the meantime (wheenie windows)
Hi cephron,
I;d be interested to know how you fare as I am thinking of building my own server for streaming media but within a 1 U box.... BUT using the PIII

mpope 02-23-2002, 03:02 PM Hello,
I have a server with a tyan 2505 board (not tualitin). I currently have 180 accounts on it, and am running ~160GB transfer per month. It seems to be running great! The average load is around .30 , current uptime is 55 days.
The only thing I would suggest to you is that you install the HIGHEST quality ram in it. I had some "middle-quality" ram in the server when it first went up, and had nothing but troubles. It would crash like clockwork every sunday morning when my backup scripts were running. Anyways, I replaced the ram with Crucial, and it's been solid ever since!
Cephren 02-24-2002, 04:48 AM Hey jjma, I will let you know how it goes once it is setup.
Im really looking forward to trying out IDE RAID 0 and see how it goes, especially in a win environment.
I will run some Sisoft Sandra tests on the board and see how it will fares.
Cephren 02-24-2002, 04:50 AM Crucial or Kingston are the good rams cause they use quality parts.
I do suggest everyone who build their own server to check the ram, especially the maker of the chips on the ram.
Cheap ram as mpope puts it, can easily crash a servers.
The best place to go to for multiprocessor advice is 2cpu.com

We just setup 2 servers with Tyan board. We had to install RH 7.2 without Raid support as "Promise" expect the multiprocessor driver to be released by the end of the month (FEB). VO tech (Steve), who installed servers told us that he expect it by the end of March :D :D
BTW, we have one server on i815, 512Mb, 1000Mhz - 70Gb/m, 350 domains, load average - 0.5-1
I think dual-cpu Tyan can handle 500-600 sites without problem.

I'm interested in a tyan board with scsi 160 support and raid to run under redhat 7.2. Is this possible? Will need to find a good case for 1U which is important too.
Thanks

jjma,
Tyan S2505T has only IDE RAID 0, 1, 0+1 support.
We'll turn on RAID 1 just after driver release (without losing information from 1st HDD).
Our case - http://www.rackmountpro.com/productpage.cfm?prodid=507
BTW, RAID 0 can't be enabled without copying data to 3rd HDD and then restoring it to 1st and 2nd HDD
I guess I shouldn't have posted as it looks like the majority of users have setups for IDE and not SCSI with the tyan boards.
I wondered if their would be support for raid with a scsi setup, which I doubt if they havn't a driver for IDE (but not totally confident)...... I liked the look of your case although I would have preferred 3 drive bays as default.
Anyone else recommend 1U cases?
Thanks.

Actually if you go to Promises' website, they finally released the drivers for RH 7.2 on the 12th

Great, these were the exact posts I was looking for. Have you been seeing any sudden crashes where everything goes dark? no access to the server, then after reboot, no errors in the logs?
Cephren 02-24-2002, 07:25 PM Its too bad that this board doesnt have a 64 bit pci slot...I wonder how it will fair with a 64bit pci raid card..........but a 32 bit pci raid card will still do.
If someone can list out the specs for their tyan + linux server that would be great. Everyone running Apache?

For 1 CPU only..... :(
The easiest way for us was to install 2CPUs with latest software and then enable RAID 1.
As for server crashes - we had not time to test Tyan servers (they are online 1 week only).
The only problems we have with our low-end server (i815) - stupid php or perl programmers and 512Mb of memory. :)
P.S. I PM you the link with i815 server load stats.

We run this board on several Win2K servers and don't have any problems with it. Machines are nice and stable.

I would be interested in this as well - running redhat 7.2 . Preferably LAMPS ontop.

Travis 02-25-2002, 12:05 PM These are good, stable boards. Just be aware that, for a reason I haven't figured out yet, they will *NOT* boot with a Mylex DAC1100 installed. (Won't even POST.) The odd thing is, they worked fine with this board's non-Tualitan predecessor.
Do you have raid setup or did you not bother?
Cephren 02-27-2002, 03:59 AM This is what I have put in.
Its not totaly finished yet......(when I get more money, I will buy the processors. I still havent decided what processors to put in. The PIII 1 GHZ processor is at around $209 CDN per chip while the tualatin chips are way more expensive and much more powerful. So its quite puzzling.
What I have right now: (not much)
An Enermax Server FS-710 case with 300 watts. Has 4 extra fan slots. http://www.enermax.com.tw/products/fs-710.htm
2 x western digital 4 GB 100 ATA 7200 drives (plan on running raid 0)
A pioneer dvd drive. Just hoping one day I can burn a dvd with files and just bring it to work and just copy them directly to the server.
Didnt put any pci cards in at all. I dont think it really needs a sound card hehee...
4x 10,000 rpm fans. 2 Rear blowout, 2 front blow in with a cutout filter from think mesh. (keeps dust out, put restricts airflow down by 30%.)
and thats about it.............. just need the processors and an OS and some tweeking and done.
Cephren 06-14-2002, 02:46 PM Finally I got the Multiprocessor Promise Drivers to work in Redhat 7.2 in smp. Boy, Promise is sure behind in linux..................
and boy, it was not fun working with the sysimage initrd files.
Have not benchmarked the drives running a fake scsi emulated raid in linux yet.
My recommendation. IDE RAID is troublesome in Redhat.
What I have tested so far is that the cpu load will be a bit higher than using the default raid software.
