I'm trying to fix an email sending delay issue.

Many folks have said it's a reverse ptr record issue. As far as I know with Dialtone, I've used their automated system to get the reverse records put into their system and have done so on all sites so far.

How would I verify it's working right or wrong?

many thanks.

use the nslookup command, and specify your provider's nameserver like this:

nslookup your.ip.addr.here ns1.your_isp.com

summary: when sending mail, there is a long (30+ second delay) before it will leave your outbox with a raq 3 when the mail sender is behind a firewall or nat router.

for those experiencing the same issue, here's the fix we found.

edit sendmail.cf in the /etc directory
look for
o timeout.ident=XX and make it timeout.ident=1s

fixed it immediately.
the raq was trying to ident the mail sender, and their router / firewall was blocking certain ports. eventually it would time out and send, but this speeds things up considerably.

Sean,

PM me with your RaQ's primary IP and the full name of your RaQ. I'll take a look. All Dialtone is really responsible for is properly configuring a reverse PTR for your RaQ in their DNS.
