View Full Version : RaQ3/4 control panel
Is it possible to skin the site administration and user administration control panels of a RaQ3 or 4?
All I want to do is change the English to another language so that it makes it easier for non-English speaking users. The server administration panel can remain in English.
Basically, I would just like to open the code in a text editor and cut and paste. Is it that simple or will it be a nightmare? What about installing it afterwards?
Chicken 12-07-2000, 11:46 PM I believe the graphics are located at:
/usr/admserv/html/.cobalt/images/
Have to telnet in and be sure. You might want to copy the dir to a place you can access it via FTP, and then shift it to your machine, then move everything back to the machine, telnet in and mov it into this dir. (Be sure to check and see if this is the directory you are talking about and make backups!!!)
Chicken 12-07-2000, 11:47 PM Sorry, I just realized that what I wrote was the images directory, but the one under that contains the other files you'll need (.cobalt). I think...
I do not own a RaQ, nor do I have a dedicated one. I am hosted on one as a site administrator (NOT "server" administrator).
Do you own a RaQ, Chicken? Would you mind trying a small test to see if it works on one of the control panels? By the way, do you have to do it by Telnet? Can't you get to ALL the files by ftp?
If it is too much trouble, I'll understand.
By the way, I like my chicken "fried."
Chicken 12-08-2000, 10:30 AM Yep I have one, and you'd have to do it via telnet. You can't get access to all the files via FTP. FTP never lets you go past a certain point.
Is it possible to remove the 'Server Admin' link on the 'Site Admin' consoles....? Does anyone know??
I asked Cobalt and they said yes, and then declined to get back in touch and explain how.
Chicken, would it be via the method you described...do you think?
Also, how do you prevent virtual site owners using telnet from cruising the other sites files?? If this has gone beyond forum rules, I apologise and I shall stand in the corner if asked to....
Chicken, by the way, how do you sing that new signature of yours in 5/4 time....like the "life is just a bowl of **** cherries ditty"?
I have some thoughts on this...
Chicken 12-08-2000, 08:16 PM I think everything server wide is pretty much in that directory ( /usr/admserv/html/.cobalt/ ), or at least in the /usr/admserv/ directory. One of those things I always meant to poke around more, but never got around to doing.
The problam with telnset is that people can poke around too much. I don't offer it for the most part. Most of the people on my server (there really aren't that many), are people who don't even log into the CP, let alone need telnet.
(Singing? Did Forest Gump ever sing it? :) )
I want to offer basic to medium hosting plans. Do you feel the RaQ is enough? I don't want to offer Telnet either but I do feel I may have to make ASP and PHP available. Any comments on that with the RaQ?
What advice do you have on RAM? In what situations would I need more than 64MB? More than 124MB?
How many sites can I host on a RaQ? The RaQ3 manual says something about 250. Is there anyway to get more than that? Does it have anything to do with the number of IP numbers? For example, if I have 2 IP's can a get 500 sites out of it?
Any recomendations for a good co-location company?
All this chicken stuff is starting to make me hungry!

Enough for basic to medium hosting plans. It is a decent server, just not as heavy duty as most would like.

ASP on a RaQ4 comes standard I believe, but will cost you if you want to install it on a RaQ3 (approx. $700)

You can start small and upgrade, but it won't be long before you'd want to upgrade 64 MB ram. Just throw 256 into it if you can afford it and you'll be happier.

Most people I've talked to put about 120 on it. Nothing to do with the number of IP addresses.

Me too! :)
Don't chickens ever sleep? Or, are you real a night owl? Whatever kind of bird you are, thanks for all the info.
Why only 120 sites per RaQ? Does it crash a lot if you go over that? What concerns me about so few sites on one server is the return on investment if you are hosting mostly low-end basic sites. Can you make any money at that ratio?
Regarding ASP, I am concerned about having to turn away clients by not having it available. At the same respect, since I am new to all this I am afraid of getting myself in over my head technically. I glanced over the demo for the RaQ4 on Cobolt's site. Not quite sure what to make of it at this point. I would assume if a client wants it, he will know what to do with it if I enable it.
Chicken 12-11-2000, 10:37 AM Ahh, I should have added that that was for a RaQ3, maybe the RaQ4 could take on a bit more. Really, they are small servers and don't have dual PIII 800's powering them. If you are generous with the amount of ram you put it 'em, then they'll like you more.
There *are* more robust hosting solutions out there, but you know that. At the same time a RaQ4 with a healthy amount of ram is a pretty good machine and would do you well.
I know many hosts who offer things they don't actually support. Like SQL. They offer it, but if you don't know how to use it their manual points you to mysql.com. I sure wouldn't want to get an ASP support request, yeeak. :)
