View Full Version : confused about how credit card processing works

Hi folks,

So if I get ModernBill and elect not to store my customer's credit card info in the script, does that mean that every month they''ll have to enter it again? Does the gateway store that credit card info for you? So you could charge the customer later for something else - a one time service? I was looking at the Authorize.net backend and I couldn't find anything that looked like it would let you enter a new charge for an old customer. Does Modernbill somehow store the customer number and then the gateway knows who to charge?

This stuff is confusing! I'm upgrading from PayPal which is soooo simple in comparison. Although it has its own annoyances.

Also, if I have an LLC and several different DBAs, can I run them all through the same merchant account and gateway? CDGcommerce said no, but I was wondering if that is possible with other CC proccessors.

Thanks!!

I don't think it is possible.

I am not too certain how Modernbill does it but I would not think that it would store the CC number on your server because of security risks. It is more than likely using the Authorizenet.com's recurring billing module that is about $25 extra a month.

As far as charging later - I am not too certain how authorizenet.com's system works, but I doubt it since you have no access to the credit card number.

It is possible - at least with most procesors. I would highly recommend you put the LLC on the footer of said DBA's websites and then (required) put it on the page where they enter their CC number and on the invoice you email them.

Now having said that if your LLC is ShinyBlue's Webhosting company & one of your DBAs is Pet Products Unlimited, get another merchant account. Just make sure that all DBAs are running similar services
