View Full Version : good windows mail server
anycolo.com 01-28-2005, 08:20 PM Hi
I am new at this windows server. Does anybody know what is a good and cheap windows mail server ? probably with mysql backend for managing its user and mailing list etc
thank you
boonchuan 01-29-2005, 04:25 AM I strongly recommend Merak, their Professional edition has mysql or mssql built in. Or you can try the open source hmailserver.com
mjb-is 01-29-2005, 01:11 PM If you want a well known and free mail server then try Mailenable Standard at www.mailenable.com
Corey Bryant 01-29-2005, 02:14 PM We use SmarterMail (http://www.smartertools.com) - our customers love the new interface and the spam features
blacknight 01-30-2005, 03:51 AM MailEnable is the pretty good, but you are better of getting one of the paid licenses than relying on the free version
HighLineHost 01-30-2005, 05:03 AM We Used iMail Server for about 3 years. Imail is nice but is very costly.
Smartermail is great, runs really good and has some real nice spam features buit in.
Also its very east to install / setup

Agreed. MailEnable Pro isn't too expensive.
The good thing about ME is that if you are on a tight budget you can start off with the Free version to get yourself going, then buy a Pro license and upgrade your install at a later date. This at least saves you having to do any kind of migration to a new mail server.
anycolo.com 02-08-2005, 07:46 PM do you know if there are any free spam filter that can be used with mailenable ?
thanks
mjb-is 02-08-2005, 07:51 PM You can try MEFilter.
http://www.mefilter.com/
boonchuan 02-08-2005, 08:22 PM You may also want to consider hmailserver which is free and open source. It allows for web based email and also Clam Antivirus integration unlike Mailenable Standard (you will need to install UebiMiau POP based Webmail, no antivirus)

Which is exactly what we did.
ThinkSupport 02-09-2005, 04:41 PM Me too with mailenable :) I like its compatibility feature which can be integrated with many control panels !
jcallinan 02-10-2005, 12:11 AM I vote for SmarterMail. I have used Imail in a corporate setting for about 4 years now, and have used SmarterMail for less than a year, but it seems solid, is not overly expensive like Imail, and is an emerging product, where IMHO Imail is struggling to try to replace Exchange instead of working on core features.
riziko 02-10-2005, 03:02 AM I tried hMailServer but had too many problems with IMAP. I am just using the MailEnable free version now.
I saw this free Anti-Spam SMTP Proxy (http://assp.sourceforge.net) recently and it looks like a good server side spam filter. I haven't tried it tho. SpamBayes is a great client-side spam filter.

boonchuan 02-10-2005, 09:51 AM Mailenable Standard does not have IMAP too which is a pity or integration with Squirrelmail would be fantastic. From what I see there isnt really any really good free email software for Windows unlike for Linux.
babarami 05-04-2005, 06:29 PM But mailenable still miss many need feature,
for example number of message in folders, html compose message,...
whittech.net 05-04-2005, 09:23 PM just installed and setup SmarterMail its really simple to use and setup!!
jt2377 05-05-2005, 03:45 PM MailEnable Free edition here. i've set it up to work with UbeiMiau. it's great for simple email stuff and if you are low on da money. it's a great software to start with. i've been using it since Aug. 2004. No problem whatsoever.
i'm planning to get a paid solution and by my own research. SmaterMail edge out on MailEnable Pro/Enterprise.
ThinkSupport 05-05-2005, 07:10 PM I would recommend Mailenable.
Try using their free version and you will love it :)
whittech.net 05-05-2005, 10:39 PM so whats the difference in mailenable and SmarterMail?

This is an old post so forgive me if you have already figured out the difference. See the SmarterMail Comparison (http://www.smartertools.com/Products/SmarterMail/Comparison.aspx) chart on the Smartermail page at Smartertools. It's a pretty fair feature assessment although they reference Mailenable Pro 1.2 and it has had several updates since then. (SmarterMail has been updated since the chart as well.)
I think the biggest weakness is in SPAM and Virus filtering which is a pretty big deal. Pro has no bayesian filtering (Enterprise does) and regardless of your virus scanner, occasionally a few slip through the MTA. Never have been able to pin down the exact cause. Stopping and restarting the MTA seems to help but after a few weeks, SPAM and Virus mails get through again. This could be repaired (possibly) by installing MEFilter as opposed to our current MTA filter but I'd rather not spend the time if SmarterMail has better filtering. (I understand from many others that MEFilter does a really good job).
Experience-wise, I can really only speak to Mailenable as that is what we use but are in the planning stages to convert to SmarterMail since we already use the other SmarterTool products and would rather have single vendor solutions where possible. Smartermail Pro filters are more comparable to Mailenable Enterprise's and Smartermail's web gui is much more robust than ME Pro's. Price-wise they are about the same.
Overall, we've been very happy with ME Pro but we need much more intense, granular filtering and short of going with a dedicated SPAM proxy, SmarterMail seems to fit the bill.
After we convert, we'll post to the advertising forum for the MEPro License if you need it.
Kiamori 10-15-2005, 11:14 PM I would recommend Imail (now ICS) by Ipswitch (http://ipswitch.com/products/collaboration/index.asp), work group mail by softalk (http://www.softalk.ws/products/workgroupmail), and mailenable (http://mailenable.com/enter_edition.asp)
Imail is by far the best in my opinion but also costly for most projects.

We're using MailEnable Professional for our Email hosting servers and are happy with its performance so far.
MailEnable's website has details of its existing antispam features.
