Hi,

Anyone hosted with rackspace.com? The service, uptime, price.... I mean dedicated servers.

Rackspace.com are simply the best, their support and uptime is exceptional. The price can't be argued with, since you're getting what you pay for. That's just my experience with them for the 6 months that I've been with them so far, I'm sure you'll here the same comments or similar by other people.

If you can afford it, I would recommend Rackspace, you'll have no problems with them, and they'll do whatever you want, straight away :).

We have a few servers located in their facility in Texas. Only experienced excellent support and service. I would highly recommend them as well.

Do a search, and you'll find almost nothing but praise.

We've been with them for a couple of months - zero downtime and exceptional support. Very happy with the move thus far!

Say Dual PIII 1000, 1 Gig Ram, 2 x 18 gig SCSI, 200 gig monthly bandwidth.

It's double the price for Dialtone and 3 times the price for smaller host!

What is your server package/price?

Ventures Online (http://www.venturesonline.com) also offers excellent service, uptime & performance for about half the price as Rackspace.

Rackspace are greedy.

Dont even think of updating your kernel to help rid yourself of exploits, as their network admin staff will charge you $100 an hour to recompile the old kernel if telnet dies.

You ask them a question via the ticketing system, and you get a $ symbol for a reply.

I hosted with them for 12 months before I got fed up with the greed and unskilled network admins.

You best bet is to ask them directly for a quote, as some of us may get special pricing because of volume.

Perhaps. But "cheap hosting will make you sick." ;)

Okay so I take it RackSpace is good but expensive?? Is it worth the price? Is tech support really available 24/7 by phone or email?

I talked to the sales guy today and he said they update kernel and security pathes for free?? sounds fishy but??

I have some servers in another data center to be named nameless and I really need good solid tech support for that once or twice a month urgent problem..

Anyone run Plesk 2.0 and use Rackspace and get good support for plesk?

I am looking for affordable, reliable, tech support and reliable oh yeah and realiable data center? :D

I would like everyones thoughts.

Thanks

Great Forum

Rackspace is a "Managed" server hosting company and generally that is included with a "Managed" server.

No, it's not free you can see what support is included on their website under http://www.rackspace.com/support/sphere_table.php.

I've found that what's listed and what they actually do for free is different. I can remember support doing a lot of odd stuff for my server for free.

I would agree with this, their support has done many things that could have had a charge for it, but didn't.. I would recommend them, they are not the cheapest but they are amongst the best around.

I think they are simply just the best around, no doubt about it... but at a price. They let you get on with your websites/business without you worrying about the uptime or the secuirty of the server as they do all the upgrades for you to keep it secure.

That's what a TRUE Managed Solution provider is supposed to do :D. It's just nice to see they actually back what they claim!

Trust me on this one - you get what you pay for. RackSpace give the best support and server management. We're running our mission critical server on Rackspace and it has never gone down. The staff are always friendly and give you advise and support.

Good luck,

Leo

For those of you at RackSpace, would you recommend getting their firewall with the server? It costs $275 a month. Is it worth it?

I'm not too sure on the firewall, but the servers at Rackspace.com are always updated with the most up-to-date patches so it'l be hard to get into a server there. They know what they're doing, I don't think there is any need for teh extra firewall. There's already some kind of software based firewall on the server.

We are a managed hosting provider and occasionally compete with Rackspace for business. Like Rackspace we are gaining market share due to larger MSP's failing and of the cost-savings companies realize in outsourcing their internet infrastruture.

Even as a competitor, it is my hope that they continue to grow because their focus on customer support reflects our focus and underscores what is important to the market as whole. A healthy RackSpace also indicates a healthy industry, which will mean profits for everyone with a well-run customer-centric business.

Well a couple things on this. It really depends what will be on the server, just using a software based firewall such as IPCHAINS, IPFILTERS, IPTABLES, means the attempt has already gotten into your network and is just being blocked at the NIC, where as a Hardware based solution such as the one you are refering to actually blocks the attempts before getting inside.

We use both a Hardware and software based firewalls on some of our machines and on others just a software based. It really depends what is on the box and how important it is to avoid being DOS'ed or something similar.

Hope this explains it a little better.
