View Full Version : Transfers / Registrar Lock
demonmoo 01-27-2005, 03:54 PM A growing portion of our domain name registrations come from transfers, however we have been noticing a large number of these transfers fail to go through because of registrar lock. Has anyone made/found a good tutorial that explains to users how to remove registrar lock from there domain names for the big registrars (like networksolutions).

Because no two registrars are the same, there's no way anyone
can create a one-size-fits-all tutorial on how to unlock the domain
name. Each registrar has its own way of doing so.
At the very least, you can tell users to contact their registrar and
ask: 1) if the domain name is locked, and 2) how to unlock it. And
emphasize no. 2, because, more often than not, no registrar will
unlock a domain name merely on an email or a customer's say so
without some way to authenticate.
Too much cherry picking going on.

davezan is right. Every Registrar has it's own method of domain name unlocking. With some Registrars customer can unlock the domain name directly from the Web Administration Interface, while with others, the domain name can only be unlocked via Customer Support.
If you are really interested in the case, I can provide you some information, which Registrars offer it via Interface and which require Customer Support Contact to unlock the domain name.

That would be great , thanks :-)
dmaven 01-28-2005, 09:11 AM Transfers can be a good area for growth if done OK, they can also be a great big source of headache as well.

How many registrars and/or resellers we're talking here? That'll
be tremendously helpful info.
zerosix 01-28-2005, 10:59 AM every registrar does it differently so you would have to pay someone to make those demos for the biggest registrars
davezan,
I can not say for sure, but I think the information will be for at least 20 Registrars. I will only be able to send the information on Monday, as far as I am very busy over the weekend. I will send it via PM.
zerosix,
I did not really get what you mean.
demonmoo and davezan.
The information has been sent to you via PM.
Unfortunately was not able to gather more information, only for 21 Registrars. Did not have more time.
If anyone else is interested in the list, please let me know.
demonmoo 01-30-2005, 01:03 PM Thanks a lot maxo :-)
Kimmikat 01-30-2005, 01:10 PM I've been trying to transfer a name from DirectNic for the last couple of days and it keeps failing due to the "Registrar Lock" issue. The security level has been changed to "normal" but it still keeps failing.
KimmiKat,
Never had experience with DirectNic. And what does the Customer Support there say?
