How did you become an editor? I ask this because when I tried for various categories they always seemed to reject my application...

these are not hokey geocities sites
and a couple of them are at 200,000 users with 5million hits a month

and now you are posting on wht to get sites

hmm maybe the editors need to go back and re-review some of there work as it is all pretty biased if you ask me

And got listed. What amazed me was the fact is was a free server and to boot, it was a very unattractive frontpgae built site. To only be topped by the fact, I am a rookie of sorts to the lot of this internet hosting stuff.

A couple of months back, acquiring a real web host at Aletia.

It is my intention to go straight back to DMOZ, once I have completed both the development issues, as well as the design issues. This site is built entirely on php/MySQL, and will utilize databases as much as need be!

Who says you can not get anything worthwhile, if it is free?
Not me, not anymore! ;)

Just thought to add my 2 cents on DMOZ. If they are to ever accept me as an editor,
I would do my best to promote their cause... without fail!
Hmmmphhhhhhh, If you know where to look and are familiar with php, you can run your own search engine... with proper accrediadations (for sure). ;)
~ (This is only hearsay though. ehhh hemmm) :)

Bows at DMOZ

Have a nice evening! :)

I thought that I would add a comment or two on this topic. I've been an ODP editor since late 1999. Since it is manned by volunteers, standards will vary from category to category. There is definitely an effort to enforce some uniformity. There are rules which govern the whole process, and there are higher level editors who have edit-all authority, whose purpose is to try to make sure the rules are being followed. But still, the process isn't perfect.

My area of editing has been in the religion area. But recently I completed a new web site http://www.ideal-tracker.com which I wanted to add to the web counter category. So I submitted it and waited a few days. Nothing happened. So I did a little bit of investigating. The editor of the web counter category had been AWOL since November. One higher level editor was doing some editing in the category, but not very much. And there was a large number of sites which had been submitted to the category, and were waiting to be reviewed.

So I decided that if I wanted my site added, I would have to apply to be the editor of the category, and add it myself. So I did and was accepted. I then went through the unreviewed sites, and found that some had been sitting there for months. One had even been sitting there since 2000 with no one looking at it. So, I added all the unreviewed sites which were still in existence.

The point is, if you submit a site to dmoz.org, check to see if there is an editor in your category. There may not be one. And even if there is an editor, it may be someone who has tired of editing, and is no longer reviewing new submissions. (Remember, it is manned by volunteers, who aren't receiving a cent for editing.)

So, if you know that your site is good, and fits the category, but it is not being added, the best thing to do is to apply to be the editor of the category. And in your application, indicate that you have some knowledge and expertise related to the category. If you just apply and don't tell anything about yourself, you are less likely to be accepted. And, furthermore, if you apply for a big category, you are unlikely to be accepted. You need to apply for a smaller category and show that you are a fair editor. Dmoz.org doesn't want editors who will favor their own sites and refuse to add competitor sites. Once you have shown that you are a fair and competent editor, you can apply to edit larger categories.

I hope that this sheds some light on the process.
