Okay guys,

I finally did it: I got myself a dedicated server all of my own. :)
(at Saburovo.com, 1GHz, 512RAM, 40GB hd, Plesk PSA)

Butttt... I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MANAGE IT :D

I'll need some help from you kind souls here at WHT. Will you help me?

Here is my first question:

* server is already completely set-up by RS & Saburovo.com, Control panel (plesk) works great, IP's are already configured (got myself DNS IP's & everything), but how am I supposed to set-up the nameservers on my domain?
Is that something I need to ask to my registrar?
Because I think I first need to get the dns domain hosted on the server, but what nameservers do I need to choose at my registrar to get the domain pointed to the server?

And then, once I get that one running, how do I manage it with plesk?

Thanks a LOT, guys...

Thomas

ps: do you know a good ssh-client? and could you give me a url to a site with all those basic server-commands (that is if it exists... ):)

In fact, just please explain the entire dns-server set-up process please, I am totally new to this and I know some of you hate newbies/-questions, but I don't know where else to go... :(

Thanks,

Thomas

And another thingie...
is there any possibility to view a website before domain name info propagates? I mean something like
http://<my.ip.add.ress>/accounts/user/www.domain.com

... or something like that (so through an ip submap)

Also: how can I change the frontpage of my ip?
When people visit http://64.246.6.21 (which is my IP), they get to see a default Plesk page. How can I edit that?

THANKS!! (i know i'm asking a lot here, and lots of things at the same time... But I know you're here for me. :) )

Thomas.

Hi,

You register nameservers at your registrars, using 2 IPs from your allocated block. Most ISPs have an automated system whereby you can just enter the hostnames (eg. ns1) and enter the ip address, then click submit, and they are registered.

Putty is an excellent SSH client, but I can't for the life of me remember where I downloaded it from, so I stuck it up for download at http://www.voxtreme.com/matt/putty.exe

We don't use Plesk, so I can't help you with any Plesk issues, although I've heard the Plesk forum is an excellent resource to visit.

Thanks a lot, Matt! :)

I haven't fully understood the nameserver thingie...
My registrar(s) control panel just allows me to set the nameservers for the domain I logged in for! I don't see any links with 'Register this domain as nameserver' or anything. :(

So... do I just have to type in the ip's & the domains (ns1.domain.com etc.) at the page where I have to configure the domain, and it should lead to my server?
That wouldn't be totally unlogical, since I would fill in my IP's... so it's possible, right?
Or not...

HEEELLLPP!!! :bawling:

;) kidding...

OK, the IP addresses for your domains are stored in your nameservers, but since your nameservers themselves are domain names, how would I know the IP address of them in the first place?

To solve this problem, there is a large, central, database of all nameservers in the Internet, this is what you have to register to.

What is you registrar?

I'm sure that at least both dotster.com and godaddy.com have automated forms on the control panel to register subdomains of your own domains as nameservers.

If there is no such forms, you should contact your registrar and ask them to register your nameservers.

As for the SSH client, I use putty, and it's very nice. You will excuse Matt's forgetting Putty's original URL when you know it is this one:
