How about hosting game servers on a VPS account ?
It is difficult or it can be done ?

Can be done with webhosting in the same VPS account?
What are the specs of the VPS for 1-2 game servers with 12 players each one?

Honestly, I wouldn't.

With a VPS, you only get a percentage of the servers resources. Depending on how many other people are on the machine, your actual performance may vary, but it will be subpar to that of someone with an actual server.

You could probably host a 12 player CS server on one, but if it negatively effects others on the machine, your host probably won't think twice about suspending your account.

I agree with TalonKarrde, something like that needs it own machine. Well unless it is something like soldat. That game uses about 3% of your cpu with a full 16 player server. But it is a 2d game. I wouldn't use a VPS for any game like CS, UT, etc.

Crap... there goes my plan down the toilet...I was going to try at most one counter-strike 16 slot server.

Talk to the person you plan on hosting with. Some of them allow this sort of thing, some don't.

If i use the VPS only for game hosting ?
will the game server run rightly?
How memory needs for 16 players at CS or COD ?

You are better off renting a game server from a game server provider. It is roughly the same price plus you don't have to deal with administrating the VPS and most likely get a control panel to be able to do other things without having to ssh,

Here is a quote from the steam forums.

Minimum hardware requirements
Server Size: 8
CPU: 800
RAM: 256MB

Server Size: 16
CPU: 1200
RAM: 384MB

Server Size: 24
CPU: 1600
RAM: 512MB

Server Size: 32
CPU: 2200
RAM: 768MB

Just rent a game server, it will make things alot simpler for yourself and your host in the long run.

I really wouldn't, game servers can be very processor and memory intensive, running on shared resources would just be asking for trouble.

Is it really? From my point of view, If you get a normal dedicated server for renting and you would be able to host at least 5-6 game servers without the system struggling. And if you get a VPS, isn't it kind of the same as running about one game server because the VPS is probably devided into about 5-6 portions?

yes, but other people will complain

With a normal dedicated you can only slow youreslf down ;)

I'm still going to try it... if my host complains aboutmy bandwidth overusage, if any, then I'll pay the necessary amount to cover it up and I'll take down the server. At least a 12 slot private counter-strike server. It should be able to handle it for a package #1 from powervps.com. Whatcha think?

TalonKarrde

It's not bandwidth.

In my experience, it's also closer to ~10 VPS per machine, if not more. One counter-strike server, if it has people in it, can use up quite a bit of CPU power. This will effect other users on the box.

Dedicated servers for games also generally have things like bind, apache, etc, all stopped instead of running. On a machine that has people with these running - And on a VPS, where there are multiple instances of each! - you get a slowdown.

It's not worth the money you will be paying.

Only way to know for sure is by testing... agree? I'll let you guys know ;).

Well I just read Powervps AUP and they pretty much say it isn't allowed.

19. Inappropriate Use of Software:
Use of software or any device that would facilitate a continued connection, i.e. pinging, while using PowerVPS services could result in suspension service.

22. No Very High CPU Usage Programs Allowed

You are prohibited from excessive consumption of resources, including CPU time, memory, disk space and session time. You may not use resource-intensive programs which negatively impact other customers or the performances of PowerVPS systems or networks. PowerVPS reserves the right to terminate or limit such activities.

Game servers pretty much fall into this category.

Why are you so bent on hosting it on a vps if you don't mind me asking. It is pretty much the same price as from a game server provider. There are more cons for it then pros for hosting a game server on a VPS.

why ? many VPS hosts says that they guarantee 500mhz cpu or higher or slower cpu.
How that will effect i the host guarantee the mhz of CPU ?

IvialisJonathan

Yeah but to get that guaranteed 500mhz cpu it is usually roughly 80-90 dollars for the VPS. You can get a low end server for that amount without all the other VPS accounts on the same machine.

Also the minimum recommended server specs for a game like CS is like a 1ghz processor. This is well over what most VPS accounts offer.
