If I'm not using Lilo, does it make a difference if the number of drive heads is set to 16 or 255? Will I have any trouble if it is set to 255?

You should use only the number the harddisk advertises. It should be listed on the harddisk itself. Or if you use BIOS translation (LBA), you need to use the number reported by BIOS.
