If someone has a net nanny installed, or any other cyber nanny for that matter, would it filter out damn in the domain name? For example bestdamnhost.com.

Could I also get some input on whether I should market bestdamnhost.com or bestdanghost.com? They both redirect to my main site for the time being, but I plan on developing another site for the name.

I think it depends on what's going to be on the site. Do you want to reach people using a 'netnanny'? If so, go with dang and hope that isn't too foul for their program. If not, then forget them and go with damn (which I really don't see as a bad word).

*blocks netnanny people from reading the message* Damn Damn Damn!

I would strongly advise against damn alot of people including me (sorry) feel that its a inappropraite word to use, its not professional, think of it this way would you go into a business meeting with your peers and start just throwing out "damn this" and "damn that" answer is NO, same goes for your hosting company.

While it's conceivable that some might filter out domain names for inappropriate language, they are more likely to filter for content. It doesn't take much to be banned from some of them. In fact, BESS, the largest filtering system used by schools, libraries, and others, used to list their criteria on their site. It included such things as offering free e-mail, having discussion forums, and many other perfectly harmless offerings. Basically, any site that had anything that might possibly be misused as regards to children, was blocked, regardless of subject matter. They have the ability to block individual pages and can allow an otherwise acceptable site to be accessible even if it has a small mumber of pages that don't meet its criteria.

My own site about diving was included on their accetable list after some forum members pointed out the forums were moderated and conversation was kept suitable for children (partly since divers can start at age 10-12).

Some of the other filtering programs can block by directories and lack the ability to block single pages. It might take restructuring a site to be unblocked by them.

Some of them have the facility to check on their web site if a particular site is blocked, though some lack even this simple provision. That's what I find objectionable, they censor without telling you their criteria and do not make it easy or possible to find out is a site is blocked.

Shame on them.

How about "darn" or "dang" instead? A bit more folksy too.

I think it depends on more on what kinda cleints you are targetting? If just personal sites that are growing big, or just some one who wonts some place in the cyber world, Damn or dang or any such word wouldnt matter. Specially if you were targeting the teen-ager group. For example, it would not matter to me.

As for the, older and more proffesional cleintal, it would matter. They would be offended by it.

So I think it boils down to, what cleint base you wont to build.

I think you are safer with 'dang' no matter what. I'm about as out there as they come, but when ti comes to choosing hosts and services, I admit I'd go for something that sounds as professional as possible. I'm changin the name of my company due to this. What I *thought* was a good idea originally, seems to be less and less of a good idea now. :(

Thanks Duster for clearing up how the nannies work.

I've decided between the two names and choose bestdanghost.com. I'm still not completely sure about developing the name though. I saw a host named godaddy.com in a COMDEX magazine and that got me thinking that if they can spend a lot of money to brand godaddy.com, why shouldn't I do bestdanghost.com? It is easy for people to remember and they always chuckle when I tell them that name will get you to my site.

I don't get much support for the name from my fellow colleagues though (all two of them :) so I'm out on my own with this one.

Kunal brings up a good point about the type of clients. Most of my clients right now are business owners that are new to the net. They know that the internet is taking off and just need a place on the web.
Those books for dummies seemed to be catchy enough to develop brand recognition.

"Looking for the bestdang price and features for hosting? Just go to the bestdanghost.com."

I don't know. Still up in the air.

As "bang" is, in some contexts, considered a euphemism for the act of sexual congress, I am hereby demanding that it be removed from the list of acceptable words at WHT.

That was highly offensive, Chicken.

Come to think of it, I'm not too sure about mentioning Texas, lately, either...
