Hello everyone

I would like to ask if there is a way to find if a web hosting provider is reseller or not. There is a special service? Could you give me an URL?

Also, I would like to know if there is a way to find how many customers approximately a web hosting provider has.

I am totally a newbie into this area, and I would appreciate any help

Thanks in advance

that's call market research son. that's why MS and other tech companies pay IDC big money to do market research. that's the only service i know about but don't expect anyone tell you how many customers/site they host. unless he/she is willing which i doubt.

Yea. Its very difficult and even childish to attempt finding out the no. of clients of your competitor. Unless ofcourse you send a spy to work in their company.

Thanks for your replies.

There isn't a way to determine how many domains are hosted under specific dns? This could do the trick I think :)

Um.. I'm pretty sure it would be possible.. but not really in a reverse fashion... so you'd need to check.. every site.. o.O

Its possible to know how many Domains are hosted on a particluar IP or server.

But you can't get to know how many clients a Reseller has because the hosted domain listing will not only list the clients of the Reseller but also clients of other resellers on the same server as well as the server owner.

http://www.dnsstuff.com - Run DNS timing or something like on the domain name and see if it gives nsx.anytothersite.com - if it does that you can visit www.anyothersite.com and see if you think this is where the person bought his reseller.

.. and that is assuming the server owner, the reseller, and the reseller's clients are all using the same IP. :)

The easy way to chcek if the host is reseller is to send him email (ask about anything) and wait for reply. Then check the emial source. You will find there the domain or IP of the server from what the mail was sent. If it's different from the domain of the hosting site it may be reseller. Go than to www site of the damain / IP you have found in mail and check what is there.

Hi!
Well...this may not be *exactly* what you want...but this does give you info I had didn't have. Go here and download their toolbar:

http://www.netcraft.com

It gives you rankings of hosts and tons of other info that can be useful in learning about hosts and the hosting business as a whole.

I don't think I need to tell you that there is a lot of new interest in the VPSs...the real ones with root access.

Good luck,

Bryon

Keep in mind that these types of information sites are rarely accurate. It may show how many domains are on an IP, but most hosting companies use a number of IPs. It may show how many domains are on a name server, but a hosting company may have multiple name servers. The easiest way is probably to ask the company yourself.
